Confirmed: Xbox 360 Has No External Screws.

Xbox.com: Tell me another cool thing about the guts.

JR: Well, we want to discourage hackers, so this time around we didn't put any screws on the outside of the box and have multiple tamper evident labels. So with Xbox 360 we'll be able to tell if they've cracked the case.

Xbox.com: And of course, just like the original Xbox, cracking the case immediately voids your warranty.

JR: Of course.

No big deal. Now we just have to deal with a bunch of plastic clips. Once we know where they are on the box it shouldn't be to hard to open.

nothing is going to keep us from opening it.  my guess is that they are using one time use plastic tabs.  if you open it, the tabs break permanently.  if so, it won't take long before someone is selling bulk bags of plastic tabs! :D

I don't think they would do any type of "open it and its broken system" because that means everytime they have to service a machine on the inside they basically have to break the case. Its more likely they just have some pressure tabs in specific places that need to be pressed.

Now...Its just a matter of figuring out where

The way I read it, it makes it sound as if Xbox Live can tell.  If it can't then this is no big deal.  Judging by the motherboard however, it looks like a bitch to solder.

you could be right, but then again, how many do you think they'll really service, compared to how much they wanna detour simple modders. I think that break-away tabs are a very viable option for M$ and wouldn't suprise me at all. Just a thought.

If I see a mobile phone or something with plain screws, I rarely try and open it, just no fun. If it has different screws, or even no screws at all, I'll spend hours trying to open it (and always suceed). The only thing that will deter "hackers" is a tamper proof switch that Xbox Live can check. Notice the quotes, I don't think it will deter the real hackers at all, just the people at home decide they want to take a peak inside or try installing a modchip, etc.

I never gave a second thought to my Xbox warrenty. The only thing that would fuck it up is if I damaged the hardware, which I was careful not to do. Hell after screwing up the harddrive I went in with a hex editor and fixed it manually, I'm so hardcore :P

I can see why MS didn't disclose much about what they've done to deter hackers, but they could have come up with something else than no screws and tamper evident stickers! If they really want to scare hackers they should pretend opening the case detonates a small tactical nuclear warhead...or something to that extent :D

Since it's a new system it means new things will be tried to chip. Things that didn't work on the Xbox might work on the 360. Who know it might be easier it all depends on what kind of backdoor is found. Having no screws sucks though. It's always hard to get cases like that apart without leaving pry marks.

there may be "special" tools that slide into slots, like car stereo's have sometimes and other things.  so we may have to fab tools (someone will sell them if this is the case) and/or other style tabs that have been mentioined.... should be interesting and fun ;)
