How Loud Is The 360?
« on: October 25, 2005, 05:27:00 AM »

I was just curious at how much noise comes out of the console? If anyone has played the kiosk's at walmart, do they make any disernable noise while running?

My V.1 Xbox drives me crazy when i'm trying to watch a movie, sounds like a friggin plane taking off!

Cheers

1. If you treat it right, blow out the fans with aerosol and keep crap away from it... the xbox 1 is not too bad

2. X360 - not loud... loudest thing is the HDD and thats vv quiet, of course the above applies to this too.

I'd take it as a huge surprise if it made any noise above next to nothing. I've seen one, but it's in the cabinet and the background noises easily surpass it's noise.

Remember that it has outer PSU which is usually the most demanding thing to cool down in a small casing. PPC CPUs are known to run cooler than PC processors and don't need so tremendous cooling.

My take is that you might hear a quiet humm when it's turned on in your living room if it's dead silent. I'd love to hear more from people that have actually turned this thing on.

I believe it. On several occasions MS said that the 360 would be significantly quieter than the current gen Xbox.

If you read the "guts" page on the new Xbox website it explains how they worked with various configurations to balance cooling ability, size, and noise level.

The 360 also has automatic an fan speed control to keep the fans spinning at the slowest speed possible that would keep the CPUs cool enough.

Also there is a software solution that shuts off 2 of the 3 cores during things like DVD movie playback to keep the console as cool and as quite as possible.

I wouldn't be supprised if they added a software solution similar to this as well: http://www.cpuidle.de

The the first revision of the Xbox is LOUD. It's because of the GPU fan. Blowing out doesn't help. I replaced both fans in mine. 80mm in the back and a Pentium CPU fan for the GPU, it helped a whole lot but it's not silent.
