No PS3 til 2007?
October 20th, 2005
Dark whispers from inside the games industry are suggesting that the European launch of Sonys next-gen PlayStation 3 console may be delayed until 2007. Unsurprisingly, Xbox bosses are bursting with glee.
Sony has thus far maintained that its on schedule for a Spring 2006 launch for the PS3, but it hasnt made it clear where that launch will be, or given details of global roll-out. Lets not forget Sonys PlayStation Portable arrived in Europe almost a year after its Japanese debut.
Xboxs UK boss Neil Thompson told videogame trade journal MCV that he believes the European launch will be significantly delayed: I wouldnt be surprised if [the launch]s not until spring 07. If they hit Xmas 06 then maybe itll be a very thin launch, a launch in name only. Thompson has his own worries, of course, with reports that the 360s world launch this December will also be thin its believed that less than 200,000 consoles are destined for the UK before Christmas.
Still, the Xbox 360 is definitely working weve played on it, and our thumbs still hurt. The PS3 offers more gaming grunt than the Xbox 360, and throws in hi-def movies courtesy of a Blu-Ray drive, but as yet there have been no live game demos, and no news about its online features. We dont want to wait for the console wars, but we might have to.
