Rumor : 40GB and 80GB HD on Xbox 360
I just read that and something crossed my mind... some xboxes come with 8GB HD and some come with a 10 GB HD partitioned to 8. I wonder if MS will let this happen again or will they tighten up because of the new hard drives? Hopefully they mess up and let some slide as only partitioned smaller.

M$ is never going to publicly release harddrives larger then 20GB for the XBOX360. The reason being is there is no "legal" reason anyone would need for then 20GB of hard drive space on your XBOX 360.

If you have more then 20GB of music, you can stream it from a PC with Windows XP, or Windows media center edition. It would be completely pointless for M$ to release a 40GB or 80GB harddrive.

Just buy another 20GB HD if you're so desperate.

the only thing i could see MS doing is releasing a 5GB, 10GB, and a 15GB drive.

or something along those lines... never will it be bigger than 30...

with all the videos one could put on a 360.... a 20 might not be enough, but who knows?

well considering each one of the movies I have on my HDD is about 4.5 gig 20gig coiuld go really, really fast. Sidepoint: does anyone know if i can put all my music onto the 360 over my network, not stream but copy it to the 360 HDD? cuz i dont want to have to move 5gig of music 256MB of my pen drive at a time. lol

They won't let anything "slide" by and partition it poorly... the reason it happened before was that 8 and 10gig drives cost the same essentially... now with 20+ gig drives and ESPECIALLY the SATA laptop drives the cost is WAY too prohibitive for that.  It will have a 20 gig, if it has a 40 then it will be intentional and it will be partitioned to be a 40.

What do you think is the first thing that's going to be hacked / modded on x360? And no, I'm not talking about changing that lame faceplate.

First unlicenced korean third party HD systems will be available in no time. Whilst trying to shut down their business, MS will take the huge overprice profit from 20gb HD first in six first month and when the demand is high enough (=users have filled up their HDs), they'll offer the 40gb upgrade.

It's a really simple business model. Knowing MS and their accessories they'll milk every dime they can.

Uhh.. Companies (other than recording- and movie-) aren't really bothered of what people put in their hard drives. If your theory about 20gb being the top "legal" limit, why do other companies push out 40gb and 60gb mp3 and portable media players? Just for the sake for supporting pirates, or making some more profit themselves?

And Bogus8 is right, there's no way they're going to deliver 40gb 2,5 drives and just partition them to 20gb. It wouldn't make any sense business-wise and they've really cut every single extra loss per console / accessory this time to make x360 more profitable.

If every one of my songs in my collection was encoded at 320kbps, I'd easily push past 40Gb.  What can I say, I prefer a digital jukebox to carrying around 300 CD's.  :P   Anyway, I can see MS putting out a 40Gb or 80Gb HDD to compete with Sony.  And what do they care what you put on it in terms of movies and music?  As long as they aren't breaking any laws, they'll do it to turn profit.

Why does everyone think this is a HUGE overprice... this is a laptop SATA the price really isn't that bloated it... I think the last time I checked a 40gig was availible for 99 bucks... that's just for the bare drive... ms has to take that drive and format it put it in the caddy and all that... granted that isn't a massive process but it's not like they are selling a $20 drive for 100 bucks.  Trust me I think MS is some greedy bastards but in this case they can't really rape us yet.. now as prices drop I'm sure they'll stay high with their add-ons and thus increase their profits but as of now it's not really unreasonable.

???

I had to read that twice to see if I was reading wrong.

How would it be pointless? Never going to release larger than 20?  :uhh:

I have a feeling you'll be proven wrong

40gb 2,5" sata drives start from 80$, 20gb drives aren't widely available for public, but if they were I'd safely say they'd cost 3/4 of the cost of a bigger drive, say $60, tops.

That's for the paying public. MS has had a bitting for the contract for manufacturing the drives and they are getting them at minimum of 10% off the retail price, making it 54$ a piece. Probably less than 50$ since we know it's a huge deal and a huge order.

x360 is a negative revenue for MS and HD is a 35-40 bucks right back to MS's pocket. Don't even think they haven't thought this thing over very closely.

I agree with you... but they do have to make a caddy and then load it with their software...  no it's not a huge over head but also making 30 bucks on a drive isn't OBNOXIOUS profits either   and they have been purchasing them since before the price was 80 for the 40gigs... I'm sure when they started it was closer to that price... eventually they will definitely be putting a healthy profit from these in their pocket but the first few will probably come close to break even.  Again yes they are making a profit but it's not HUGE.. the idea of HUGE is because people see 100 bucks for 20 gigs and then they look at normal 3.5" drives and say "that's rape" then everyone just jumps in.  I think I might have been the first person to post here (this section at least) about the actual price of 2.5" SATA 40gigs (when they were 100 bucks) at that  point people were saying that 40 gig drives were only 30+ bucks from newegg.  That is my beef :D
