Running New Games On A Dual Layer Disc?
« on: October 03, 2005, 02:52:00 AM »

How is MS and developers gonna manage this as the more advanced a game is the more room its gonna need right? I mean a few of XBOX games currently have had to install content on HD or had it cut so it can all fit on a dual layer. Is a Dual layer DVD gonna be enough for some of the great games to be expected? I personally don't think itsenough and it will mean 2 disc games etc which is bad unless there rpg's or something where ppl are used to e.g. a lot of ps2 rpgs were on multiple discs.

What ps2 games where over 1 disc??  You meant psone right?

Ya the fact that they didn't go with next gen dvd drives and actually had the gall to make a 360 package w/o a hard drive makes me want to hate.

I do not personally think it'll make that much difference, and here's why-

The biggest spacer eater on any game at the moment is video, and what this actually adds in terms of game play is very, very little.

Now ok with the Xbox being HD ready you'd in theory need more storage space to holder the even bigger movies this will enable, but what if you could repalce these videos with instead real-time graphic based interludes? The 360 is more than capable of this and the space used as the game engine and graphics willl already be there is again very little.

The biggest problem that we'll have here is lazy, wasteful programming were software houses find it easier to hire a CG film house to add their video, and of course the industry standard attitude of lets do so thing that can be ported with as little work as possible to every console and the use of off the shelf solitutions to this ends (does no one write bespoke code these days!).

It's a very human problem the more we have the more we want, be it games, money or latest technology and this is not always the best solution!

I don't see the need for any of the next generation storage formats yet, and probably wouldn't until that piece of killer software appears, but with Sony trying to push it's Blue Ray solution and the amont of DRM involved in HD DVD, I'll prefer to stick with a good old cross format easily writeable DVD for now.

Just my thoughts, I understand that everyone will have a take on this but at the end of the day there are pro's and cons on both sides, afterall HD DVD doesn't come to the mark till next year, would we be willing to wait? ... more importantly would M$ and loss their possible advantage over Sony, and don't forget the important costs issues, it been estimated that with SOny adding Blue Ray to the PS3 they've added just over $100 to the end retail price ... Pro and Cons fellas.

Cheers
Jinxter

Yeah I know but lik I said though as a huge RPG fan the 360 might not be for me. The only posible good thing to come out of this is modding will be a LOT easier as backups of DVD's is already out and also softmod installers etc would run better hopefully they don't have tha crappy drive they use in current xbox's.

Most developers who pick rendered movies over real-time arent lazy, in fact it takes much more time and money to produce a rendered scene rather then a real-time one.  im sure there are more artistic reasons why most developers still are using rendered movies.

if you are a RPG fan how is the 360 not for you?  before the system is even launched there are more RPGs announced for the system than anyone thought possible.  i love RPGs and cant wait to get my hands on enchant arm, blue dragon, and 99 nights (among others).

really all this talk and worry about disk space is getting old.  did it REALLY bother you that much to swap the game disc every 30-40 hours??  as long as the gameplay, graphics, and sound arent going to suffer then i say dont worry.  i agree with the other smart people, why bother having a next gen format when one isnt even finalized?  DVD-9 is a proven and perfected technology that isnt going to have near the issues as Blue-ray when it comes to games.  give me a 12x DVD drive over a 1 or 2x blue-ray drive any day.

seriously? wtf? who cares about swapping discs?? youre not doing every time you load something! (IE: walk through a door into a new room/area) and its not like there are 40 DVD's to keep track of per game either... i dont get it? id be more worried about them having load times in games still..... rather.. HIGH load times with a POS load bar.... sigh*

im not even worried about load times, all of the vids have been really fast and after the game is polished more and optimized im sure the load times will be next to nothing compared to this generation.

I give up your probably right longer loading times are gonna be more commen unless they put a top range player in the thing.
