Hd-dvd Upgrade?
« on: September 24, 2005, 08:36:00 PM »

Like most people in this forum, I'll be buying the new xbox 360 in november.  But i was also wondering, when I have my xbox 360, and MS decides to have the HD-DVD upgrade, how will it be done?

Will I have to send my 360 in somewhere and pay an extra fee to have it upgraded?   How exactly will MS deal with this upgrade?  Or wil MS just say, too bad for the people
that already bought one, they get no HD-DVD.

Does anyone have any ideas regarding this?

Thanks,

Shawn Logic

i honestly think theyre just gonna wait untill next gen. to do the hd-dvd. i dont see any reason why they will really need it. it would cost more/be more of a hassle then its worth. they can just use multiple dvd9.

It'll be a new premium version that plays HD-movies. You'll still be able to buy the non HD version.

Your 360 will still be good because it will run all the games fine. They'll never come out with a game that only works on HD 360's.

The HD version will be for movies and to compete with Sony's PS3.

If you already have an 360, just keep it and buy a stand alone HD movie player which will work a lot better to play HD movies anyway. And by the time the HD 360 comes out, buying an HD-DVD player will be a lot cheaper than selling your 360 and then buying the HD version.

i doubt we will ever see hddvd running on the 360 without it being modded.. ms saying that they reserve the right to make a hddvd addon in the future is only marketing because ps3 will have blue ray and 360 is still using dvd9.. i love ms and the 360 but again i dont think we will ever see hddvd from the factory or as an addon

This is probably one of those debates that will be pure speculation until MS actually announces something.  Or perhaps nothing at all.  I think that it would be foolish not to consider it.  But they will be the ones doing the research from a cost-benefit standpoint and from that, the decision would be made.  I think that ultimately, it may become critical as they are trying to make the XBox360 the centerpiece for entertainment in every home.  Though, it's a tough call as to how quickly HD-DVD will take to be in high demand in the market in relation to the next generation after the 360.  It might be interesting to see how maybe Toshiba might get involved in this.  In order to promote the technology, will they step in and subsidize it's implementation into the 360?  As a consumer, it would be a great way for me to get into the HD-DVD market without a huge investment.  My current DVD collection is substantial and I really don't care to have to buy a HD-DVD changer.  I would begin to buy HD-DVD movies as they become available, but I don't think I'd want to buy a dedicated player right away.  A 360 with an HD-DVD drive would be ideal for now as I could pick and choose the dedicated HD player I want when I have a HD collection large enough to warrant it.  Even better would be a 400 disc changer to house my entire collection in(which I was looking at getting for my current DVD collection until the HD wars began).

I won't expect an HD-DVD player in the 360 anytime soon.

Remember it was only in the last year or so when DVDs finally began to out sell VHS.  It will take a long time for the general public to switch to HD televisions let alone HD videos.  I think HD-DVD and/or Blu-Ray will be a niche market for hardcore videophiles for at least a few more years.

I just don't see MS doing anything until the next-gen video formats are more mature.

Also remember, that the addition of a HD-DVD player in the 360 will probably not have an impact on the actual games.  Even with a HD player, the games will stay on normal DVDs to ensure backward compatability.

I wouldn't mind a HD-DVD peripheral, but I am certainly not holding my breath for one.

worst case is that the games for the 360 might be on two dvds, but it will still load faster than the 1x blu-ray drive that is in the P  S3
