The Dvd Argument
« on: September 11, 2005, 03:55:00 AM »

I compiled this document from data I have researched. Some people may call it biased but I beleive this is a fair analysis as to why DVD will suffice for the upcoming generation.

Comparing the size of last generation games to the current generation. If anyone has any extra USEFUL info I would appreciate it and adjust accodringly

Fighting:
PS1: Tekken 3: 650 mb
XB: Soul Calibur 2: 1.3gb
Predicted next gen size: 2.6-3gb

Racing:
PS1: Gran Turismo 2: 890 mb (compressed, if someone could tell me the actual size of this that would be great) Uncompressed I would guess about 1gb+)
XB: PGR2: 4gb, however somehow over 2 gb of that is audio
Predicted next gen size: Right this is a hard one. Basically auido will be staying the same size (2gb) so the remaining 2gb should double in size, therefore my predicted next gen size is 6gb.

Stealth:

PS1: MGS 1: 1.4gb (was double CD)
XB: Splinter Cell 2 (I don't have 3): 3gb
Predicted next gen size: Around 6+ gb

Platform:

PS1: Spyro the Dragon: 330mb compressed (about 450mb uncompressed?)
XB: Conker: 4.5gb

Again audio won't increase in size, 3.6gb of Conker is audio. That leaves 900mb of actual game (Jesus that surprised the hell outa me, conker is big and pretty)
Predicted next gen size: 900/450=2. 900x2+3.6gb = 5.4gb

Sports/Extreme Sports

PS1: Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2: 480mb Compressed (550 uncompressed?)
XB: SSX3: 2gb
XB: Jet Set Radio Future: 2.4gb

SSX: 1gb is audio, so we multiply the remaining 1gb by 1000/450 which is 2.2gb. Then add the audio back on.
Predicted next gen size: 3.2gb
Jet Set Radio Future: 1.4 gb is audio..
Predicted next gen size: 3.6gb
Add 'em and divide them by 2 = 3.4gb

First Person Shooters: I'm not doing Halo 2 because I don't know how much of the data is audio

PS1: Medal of Honour Underground: 530mb zipped - 650mb unzipped?
XB: Deus Ex: Invisible War: 2.9gb
XB: DOOM 3: 2.8gb.

Deus Ex.. hmm.. 1.1gb of that is audio. (1.8gb/650)x1.8=5gb. Plus audio thats 6.1gb
Ok the deal with DOOM 3. It's 2.9gb. Now I didnt do this with any of the other games because they are gonna be small enough anyway it was a little pointless. Right, no more CGI next gen thankyou, so thats - 1.6gb. Jesus that leaves the actual DOOM 3 game at 1.3gb - madness! Cant be bothered to do the audo bit I'l just multiply that with the rest of it.
Predicted size next gen: 2.6gb. Oh and I suppose if you must you can add the CGI now. Wait what's that? 4.2gb? That still fits on a DVD5
Average: 5.15gb

RPGs: I would expect this to have the hugest increase.. Also I don't believe it's fair to remove the video's fro the current gen versions just yet..

Right...

PS1: Final Fantasy 8: 2.8gb
XB: Fable: 2.3gb
Whoa wait what????
Hmm I'm gonna try this another way:
PS1: Final Fantasy 8: 700mb (remove ALL videos)
XB: Fable: 1.85 (remove ALL videos again)

Predicted next gen size: 4.9gb

Jade Empire: 6gb. Minus 3gb of videos = 3gb.
1.5gb of that is audio. So (1.5gb/700)x1.5gb + 1.5gb = 3.2gb + 1.5gb = 4.7gb

When doubting Ozy sees the light of xbox 360 he will not doubt any longer. He will then go preach the message of xbox 360.

You can probalby count on the xbox 360 games will also be compressed. Thus the need for a H.D.D. would make room for the files to uncompress faster.
