Xbox360 Controller Buttons Are Digital Now
« on: August 31, 2005, 09:14:00 PM »

I guess this means no more bullet passes or lobs in football games anymore.

Itagaki states that because the buttons on the Xbox 360 controller are not analogue, the gameplay will have to be adjusted accordingly.

August 31, 2005 - Team Ninja head Tomonobu Itagaki revealed at MS Japan's July Xbox Summit that his team was currently working away on four Xbox 360 titles outside of Dead or Alive 4. The latest issue of Famitsu Xbox features an interview session with Itagaki in which the lead ninja discusses his team's plans.

It turns out that, although five titles are officially known to be in development for Xbox 360, it's not the case that this is all the support Xbox 360 will get from the team. Itagaki refers to the five titles as being a road map for Team Ninja. His team would like to produce, at the very least, five Xbox 360 titles.
Famitsu Xbox goes into specifics on Team Ninja's lineup. First up is DOAX2, which Itagaki reveals is a true sequel to Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball. In addition to volleyball, DOAX2 will include one additional main game. Volleyball and the new game will serve as the pillars for DOAX2, but Team Ninja is also planning on adding other means of waterside fun as well as a more robust casino element. Regarding the volleyball gameplay, Itagaki states that because the buttons on the Xbox 360 controller are not analogue, the gameplay will have to be adjusted accordingly.

Dead or Alive Code: Cronus is next up in Famitsu Xbox's question and answer session. Itagaki first clears up some confusion about the game's genre. Tecmo apparently issued a press release stating that Code Cronus would be a child-oriented game. Itagaki corrects this, revealing that the game's genre is "Kodomo," the Japanese world for "Child." However, the game is not, in any way, meant for kids. Looks like we'll have to wait for specifics, as Team Ninja is currently hard at work on Dead or Alive 4.

Project Progressive is next in the hot seat. Itagaki refers to the game as being a new challenge for Tecmo. The genre is action, but we can expect a completely different type of action from what was featured in Ninja Gaiden. Development was actually done on the original Xbox, but, like Code: Cronus, was switched to Xbox 360.

Finally, Itagaki is asked to discuss the mysterious fifth title in the team's lineup, whose name wasn't even announced at the summit. Famitsu Xbox asks specifically if the fifth title is Ninja Gaiden 2, and Itagaki doesn't answer directly, but does say that the game would have had such an strong impact that he felt it would be better to hold off on a proper announcement. We won't have to wait too long to learn the title's true identity, though. Itagaki states that Team Ninja should be able to properly announce the game once the identity of the mysterious wrestler from Dead or Alive 4 is revealed, which we presume will happen later this year with the release of Dead or Alive 4.

Given Itagaki's comments, it seems unlikely that the fifth title in Team Ninja's lineup is Ninja Gaiden 2. But that doesn't necessarily mean the sequel to one of the best action games ever is not coming to Xbox 360. We'll have to wait for future interviews with Itagaki (likely through Famitsu Xbox) for more hints.

I called 1 800 4my xbox to try to get an answer, as to if this was true. After about 30 minutes of waiting.... 3 times 10 minutes each. He couldn't give me an answer.

I don't get it... why would they do that? It can't be that hard to use analog buttons rather than digital.

not the triggers right, cause that would be even more foolish as we have become quite accustom to using them for throttle.

On the Xbox controller, the A/B/X/Y buttons send a different signal depending on how much pressure is applied when you press them. For example, DOAX Volleyball players hit the ball with more power if you hit the appropriate button harder. A digital button is either off or on; it doesn't matter how hard it's pressed. Most previous consoles used digital buttons.

The triggers are definitely going to remain analog; however, the new shoulder buttons will be digital as well.

This is going to drive me crazy, but I know I've heard this before. I can remember wondering how backwards compatibility was going to work on games like DOAX if the ABXY buttons were going to be digital.

I really cant see them going to a digital button for any of the buttons. Its taking a step backwards in technology. Almost all of the games have used pressure sensative buttons or the tap, press, and hold combonation in some sort of way. it would be absurd to not use anolog buttons.

You can lob a football, but not with different pressure.

In some games, you would press the X button and then apply tiny amounts of pressure which affect your kick. If you press it really hard, you'll do a strong lob, if you tap it gently, you'll do a closeby lob.

well they weren't true analog... there wasn't actually pressure sensor in there (if there was the controllers would have been ungodly expensive).

Basically it was "3 step digital" meaning it basically could tell you if it was a light, medium, or hard push. Nothing more nothing less. Definitely not to much data for the wireless bandwidth considering the triggers and sticks get converted into digital data with a 256 point resolution.

My guess is... it was more expensive to deploy than it was worth considering how few games actually used it. I don't play most sports titles but I honestly can't think of any game where I'd actually miss it.

As for BC on DOAX I would imagine it's part of the profile, how the game interprets button presses.

This is stupid.  The wired controlelrs are $10 more expensive for an official MS controller, and they are basically the same, except for the ring of light, shoulder buttons, moved start and back, and a few other things.  Don't prices go DOWN, not UP?  But, how hard, or expensive, is it to implement this?
Halo 2 uses this when dual wielding.  Not many people use it, but pressing the X button lightly reloads your left gun only, while pressing it firmly reloads both.
PS2 didn't have this, and that's why I hate Madden for PS2 (one of too many reasons to discuss here).  In sorts games like Madden, it's great to decide to either throw a bullet, lob, in-between, low, high, outside, or inside of receiver.  Features like this are what separate the hardcore gamers form the average gamers.  This is what makes us better than the average gamer.  We use this stuff, they don't.  That's why we're better.  aybe that's why they've dropped it.  The average person and game doesn't use it.

Oh well.  MS has some time to come to their senses, still.

tongue.gif people that do play stupid football games and therefor I would think it would be dumb if they didn't make them for the 360 ... same as everyone should with analog buttons  mad.gif

*Edit: My nephew hates analog sticks so does everyone agree with him that they are crap and we should just go back to nintendo directional pads?  Didn't think so.
