its not a step back when the game supports 4 wireless controllers which it was designed for.  if it means that much to you just pay the extra $10 for wireless controllers when you buy extra controllers.

I should note that it looks like the 360 will be the only console to have wired controllers as an option next gen...   :rolleyes:

Sony hasn't shown any wireless controllers and Nintendo hasn't shown any controller ports.

Wired controllers don't matter to me, but if they insist on going with this two-tiered philosophy and offer one tier that comes with a wired controller, it would make sense to have the system be able to support 4 wired controllers.  Especially for times when batteries go out on one or more of the controllers.

EDIT:  So does that also mean that only 2 wireless controllers at a time can be charged and played at once through the usb ports?

No, I know there are three, but with it being in the back that seems counter-intuitive in placement if it was meant to be used for controllers.  The placement (and odd number of usb ports) seems to suggest that the back one would be used for storage devices or other usb connections.

I realize that you can easily get a usb hub, but it seems that with this generation of xbox, they are making what we loved about this gen "optional" (ie: have to pay extra) rather than coming with the unit.  Yes, I realize that it comes with the 4 wireless capablility out of the box, but to me if I've got to worry about keeping up with the AA batteries or buy another 30-40 charger kit, I'd rather just have the cord...it's never given me problems before.

A good marketing strategy, yes, but not a precedent that exites me as a consumer.  It's not a deal-breaker for me as I'd much rather at this point go with the 360 over the other two options, but not a strategy that I as a consumer appreciate.

Anyway, the average gamer is going to have wireless controllers, so, in an efort to save money, MS decided to cut you out a few USB ports.  Oh well, you're stil getting a deal, right?

Of course...I'm definitely not arguing against that.  The 360 (premium) represents the best deal in videogame history, imo.

Wireless controllers aren't a major concern in the next gen imho b/c the extra trouble / upkeep doesn't outweigh the advantages.  Sure, on paper it sounds good to be able to be 30 feet away from the tv while you are playing, but in reality unless you have a huge tv you wouldn't be able to see that far away or want to be that far away anyways.  

To me, it's more comparable to giving the public something that there isn't a huge demand for in the first place at the cost of taking away one of the cool things we liked about the first xbox...4 wired controller capacity out of the box.

Now as far as wireless ethernet adapters, etc, I think there is a demand for that, but with controllers, not as much, especially since you will have to be replacing AA batteries if you play alot or having to charge your controllers only two at a time (b/c of the limited # of usb connections).  Like I said, it's not a deal breaker, but just something to think about.

The advantages of a wireless controller are greater than just being able to sit 30ft away.

Though sitting a substantial distance back will be more common with those who who have HD sets... as most HD devices are larger in size, CRTs used to sell mostly in the 20-30" range HD sets sell mostly in the 40-50" range.

I personally have a projector for my gaming, 4 controllers all with cable extensions is not fun at all: You can't walk across the room without worrying about tripping over a cord and accidentally breaking a controller, the console, or worse... yourself.

That much wire gets tangled easily. Very rarely did I Play with exactly 4 people, it was almost always more than that so controllers got passed around a lot (winner stays looser pays...). After a few games the controller wires would get all braided up and you couldn't determine which controller went to which port  and the effective length of the cords got smaller the more they got knotted. Every once in a while you'd get pissed off and have to untangle the whole mess (which to me is far more annoying than plugging in to charge or replacing batteries after 40+ hours of play).

Then when you were done if you didn't want your gaming room to look like a rats nest you had to again untangle and wrap up each of the controllers.

Wireless is just the natural progression of things, when was the last time you saw a TV or a VCR with a wired remote (they used to have them remember... or maybe you don't).

If nothing else I like it for it's clenlyness...

Also remember that the battery life is 40+ hours with full rumble and the XBL headset. Think about that. If you don't use the headset and put the rumble down a notch or two that life will probably double. Say you play about 10 hours a week... that's about 2 friggin months before you have to replace your batteries or charge. 2 MONTHS! I've had my GC for over a month now, I bought the wavebird used and it had batteries in it from the last owner... I have yet to replace them.

I stand by that anyone who is worried about the "problems" with wireless have never owned a Wavebird or one of the Logitech Xbox wireless controllers.

After I got my first Wavebird I stand buy that I will NEVER buy another wired controller again...
