Xbox 360 Hdd....2.5" Or 3.5"?
« on: August 17, 2005, 12:49:00 PM »

So there have been so many talks that M$ will still use a hard drive (if you get the "premium" cosole) and they have told us that it will be detachable and upgradeable, my curiousity lies with will it be a 2.5" laptop drive or a standard 3.5" desktop hard drive.  Any clues on this because obviously desktop drives are cheaper and by today's standard still provide more space than a laptop drive can yet.

yes it's definitely a 2.5" which also explains the enormous cost.
Not to mention it's an SATA drive

As far as I know there are no 2.5" SATA2 HDDs yet, especially none with 20GB. SATA has been chosen for space reasons only I guess, as a 2.5" HDD could never really make full use of even the standard SATA bandwidth... but the cable's pretty small, only 4 contacts, so M$ keep their engineers happy.

Theoretically it would be just as difficult as the current gen... basically it comes down to formatting...

I think you could add a 3.5" drive to the system by simply bypassing the SATA interface and using the USB interface with the Mass Storage driver built into the x360. Since the x360 is able to recognize ipods and memory cards, it may be possible to emulate a device in such a way to allow you to store on it. The only tricky part is the MS License requirement for all peripherals, they may provide read only access to certain types of devices.

I could definately see someone altering the box to store the drive at the top, flipped on side allowing the addition of two drives, like the SATA 2.5" and a 3.5" USB 2.0 connected drive.

I would imagine that the 360 will look at Mass Storage devices and the official hdd VERY differently... remember we can't run code from the memory cards in the current gen console... even after modding.

You could buy an SATA hard drive... or they also make SATA to IDE converters...

Personally I'd just buy a 3.5" SATA drive and plop that in... it'd improve the transfer time too...

If you're really interested search the XS news... they've announced the actual brand and model number of the HDD

I want to say it's a Seagate LD25 but I could be wrong.

No doubt drives will fail and people will not be able to return them under warranty even in the first few months, lost receipts, stolen machines etc. It probably wont even matter for the first few months since it will take the tech heads to get to grips with what to do with it (or will it take that long). Anyways Ima hunt me down a broken stock hdd cartridge and pop it open and put another hdd in ... assuming another hdd is even needed for modding, though if games can be ever run from it im up for that cus i like them loading fast.

the drive is serial, this allows the drive to be disconnected without turning off the console, not to mention its G- shock theshold

not to mention that fact that the conectores are much smaller and easier to connect (but sometimes have a tendency to slip out).

true, most(not all) serial drives are hot plug capable. but

as a 2.5" HDD could never really make full use of even the standard SATA bandwidth... but the cable's pretty small, only 4 contacts, so M$ keep their engineers happy.

4 contacts? serial ata is more along the lines of 7 or 8 pins.
