it also means that if there is a failure with the harddrive, the only mechanical piece in the xbox360 and more prone to failure, the whole xbox360 doesnt become inoperable.

That may be... but seeing as the HDD is swappable and upgradable... I would rather have games depend on the HDD and if it breaks buy a new one then run without it...

opinions are like clitorii

....

The main reason for this anouncment from what I see is shielding from a future decision to NOT have the HD by default. If they tell us now then later on when they choose to NOT bundle it we can't say.. WTF.

thats it.. no nastiness, no deeply entrenched conspiracies.. just plain economics & PR combined.

sure its more work for them, but i think it makes the system more stable

what if they dont wanna go through with the extra work? Devs could easily get lazy and not add compatibility for the hdd (*cough* EA! *cough*) because MS gave them an excuse (even worse, they dont even tell the consumer whether it utilizes the HDD or not!). This whole thing just reeks of ps2.......

I can't disclose any information regarding our use of or technicalities of the HD - sorry twisted.

What people are missing is the HD's primary use and its NOT for games. It will be a LIVE Storage device. Plain and simple. Yes some games can be designed to use the caching if its required. Others will not bother for whatever reason.

It is fine....  The chances of a hard drive becoming broken or lost is at stake here.  You have to send a message to the devolpers that a person might loose their drive, and then cacheing is not avalible.  So the devs could load all the extra's to the RAM and use that as a backup if the hard drive is gone.  The dash is already in the RAM anyway.

There is only going to be one standard for the 360 games, and it will be highly unlikely that there would be a performance boost with hdd's over games that ran without it.

Bottom line is, 360 game will not use cashing or virtual memory if the hdd is not required for games to work.  Simple as that.  Which, imo, is a waste of an hdd, and the main reason to have an hdd.  Being able to use the hdd for game performance would be a big plus in the wars against the ps3.
