Hey.  I keep hearing about how if the console is not released with HD-DVD support on the launch date that it may be integrated into later consoles.  Come on, what do we think the feasibility of that is?
Wouldn't that really hurt developers?  Would they make a version on HD-DVD and DVD-9?  Wouldn't that just screw the people who bought the first version.

My opinion, it (an upgraded system coming out later) ain't happening.  If it's not there on release day, which I hope it will be, it won't be there at all.

I know the chances are slim to none that if the HD-DVD is not in the xbox on launch day then it will probably never be in the but I really hope it is.  If they don't have a HD-DVD then they are going to lose a ton of sales to the PS3.  What is a so called nex-gen console without a nex-gen dvd drive.  If they don't have any news of a different dvd drive by the time of the ps3 launch i would be tempted to buy the ps3

Even if it is just for watching movies I really hope they put one in there because that would be a big selling point for me.

HD-DVDs would have relatively low read time. so id rather have a smaller faster reading media, than a huge slow reading one.

thank you, lost boyz has a brain.  for games why would you want it? first off if devs. dont think its needed and MS included it for people with hdtv for at least 50-100 more in manufacturing costs everyone pays  for it right? why should people who will never use it cause they dont have hdtv have to pay for it especially when it wont be used for gameplay

HD-DVD reads regular DVD's at their maximum speed... 12X I believe.  Just because the drives read HD-DVD at 1X (no idea what KBPS that is) doesn't mean they can't read DVD's at 12X.  If you have a DVD burner, it probably reads DVD's at 8X.  But it also reads CD's at their maximum (52X?).  Therefore, games could come on EITHER medium, just like PS2 offers CDROM or DVDROM games.  If anything, HD-DVD drives will be easier to make read faster because they are the direct evolution of DVD.  Whereas Blu-Ray is totally manufactured differently.  I don't want Blu-Ray.  It will be slow.  HD-DVD doesn't necessarily come with that caveat because the mastering is already familiar.  

I don't really want HD-DVD either because it'll add more cost than DVD.  But on the other hand, it will be the deux ex machina for Toshiba's war.

HD-DVD's 1X could still be fairly quick couldn't it? Given that DVD's 12X is faster than a CD's 52X.

These HD-DVD topics are about as annoying as the 'how can we mod it?' topic's it has been discussed many itmes in alot of threads. Bill has stated IF they have HD-DVD it will be intergrated in a later model if that doesn't happen you won't see it at ALL, which is what will very likely happen. There is no reason to think they will have HD-DVD yet other than a few 'IF' comments. I doubt they will include it in a later model because people will be in a big uproar, it would be a bad move.

Twasi is correct. It is unlikely now that MS will include and HD-DVD drive. There is still the possibility, but we don't know and won't know till late in August or so. If MS was to release a later version with HD-DVD it would mean detrimeant to this nex-gen "war". They would be massive uproar in the gaming community, especially umong people like us.

My opinion: There has been speculation and statements from Toshiba saying that MS is "dragging ass" on the topic. I think that there is still 4 months for MS to add an HD-DVD drive. If they didn't they would be kneeling to the PS3's blu-ray. Yes, most people can't afford HDTV's, but MS approach to this console is "the casual gamer with money to spare". This meaning people who will actually use the MCE Extender for music and such in a legit way and the other features that wouldn't benefit just a regular gamer. Someone who just wants to play a good game for an hour or two that don't care for luxories. They could include it without to much production cost. Plus, MS is known for taking a loss and getting profit later. So it's not a complete longshot. Things are not set in stone till a month or two before launch.

I was going to say it wouldn't be possible for them to add one because the 360 hitsp roduction lines in a few days (sometime in August according to Allard) but they could still add it later, I just think it's unlikely because they don't want people to wait for the HD-DVD version and possibly get a 360. I don't know, the only reason I think it's annoying is because we simply don't know yet so there really isn't any reason to discuss it, there has been like 4 threads on this and they all end in why DVD9 is better for games than HD-DVD  Maybe they will maybe they won't, there is enough evidence to argue both sides, who knows.
