Hacking The Samsung Sdg-605f Drive For Xbox ?
« on: November 15, 2004, 06:08:00 AM »

;) Hello to all. I recently bought an xbox from may 2004. ;)  First of all i was happy when i saw an Samsung DVD drive cause i knew it will read everything. But later on when i mod-chipped the box. I encuntered that my drive which is Samsung SDG-605F can't read most of the CDRW and all of my CD-R that i had.    I was really pissed cause the drive that reads eveything is Samsung SDG-605B. Well i've extracted an original bios from my dvd before loading the bios from SDG-605B. My drive wouldn't start   up so i've loaded the old bios that i've extracted previously. Can somebody look on it or maybe try to hack/patch it somehow. ???

the orginal SDG-605F  from my dvd drive and SDG605B bios you can find at:

GreetZ to all... & PLS HELP ME... !

Can you open up the SDG-605F and make a list of the various ICs on the board(s)?  I'm curious as to whether Samsung has continued to use the Mediatek chipset or if they've moved on to something different.

Well yes the Samsung SDG-605F uses still the mediatek chip. I will make some photos soon about 605F and all chips inside of it...

I realized after making my post that it obviously still uses the Mediatek chipset because you were able to run the mtkflash program on it.  If it uses the newer MT1358 instead of the MT1329E as used in the SDG-605 then it may be possible to to mod the Samsung SD-816 with the SDG-605F's firmware.  Just speculation of course.

Well there is one thing i have to tell you.   I haven't used mtkflash program cause it didn't work. I'am for 100% sure that the chip on my drive is mediatek but mtkflash wouldn't work on my drive when i conected it into my PC. Don't know why   . I've used external flash eprom programer after i solder out org eprom from my drive and then i solder to the drive PPGA socket for it (so now i can easly swap the chip from one place to another). That's how i extracted the orginal bios. :P  I have some other flash eproms like 2mbit 256k that i can insert into that drive so later on it can be flashed with bigger binary file. But which one could that be :(

I wonder if wouldn't that be a laser problem that it couldn't read CD-Rs. If yes would it be possible to swap just a laser from some other samsung drives. It is i think possible to do but need to know a exact construction of cable connectors and all other junk. :)

well don't even consider it , pure abstraction.

Sorry to piss on your firework but a small word of caution.......

apart from obvious 128kb firmware needs to pad to 256kb for later dvd drives like a 616Q

once you flash the Q you will have same problem - you won't be able to pull the firmware off again or reflash it again

it will read dvd originals but not most cdr's - an exact copy of the 605F

616Q uses a similar laser to the 605B but different one to the 605F - 2 pots on the 605b/616t/f - Q/E's are slightly wider ribbons and have 2 pots also

605F uses a single pot

flash a Q with 605F firmware and yup will work - read originals - little quirky but main problem I found it scratches discs when the laser raises too high on it's initial focus when discs are inserted

was gonna try other drives but was a tad busy lately so never bothered to post findings until I got it completely sussed

yes I had to rip the chip off the pcb also - anyone wanna buy a 605F laser or most of what's left ?

or if someone wants to buy the 616Q reads originals but scratches discs so I can fund my next test project

I'd compare the 816 laser with the 605F laser first before you flash or you may end up with a drive similar to the 616Q

I thought the 816 was a similar or different name for the 616QEB or the 616EEB

E models don't have volume and ear piece plug at front but same hardware

I have an external flash programing device so i shouldn't be worry i guess. ???

Fair enough - I was just letting ya know my findings

I didn't use my Willem programmer to pull off the bios, instead I stuck the sst 39sf010a into a 32dil/dip32 to 32plcc converter - (MQP electronics AD51)

and just plonked into a shitty old p166 and pulled the bios off with uniflash

You may find that you will have to pull the 816b's 39sf020 chip and reflash it ya programmer or perhaps solder 32 wires from the sst chip on 816b pcb and carefully plug them into your programmer and reflash the dvd back to original firmware - with the dvd off of course

best of luck

:D  I have modded a sd 616f drive . Before for flashing it read every thing bar original games. To get the drive to read originals the I flashed the drive with 605b firmware. Yes the drive does not read cdr's etc. after flashing the reason it's now a sd605b sammy. My suspicion is that there is code in 605b which recognises original games and this code replaces the some normal pc dvd features as in sd 616f drive. The code is difficult to decipher as its written in a high level language. Has any one got a copy of a complete spec data sheet and not the abbreviated one as on the MTK web site?  :jester:
