You controller is dying. You say damnit, I'm still playing though. You plug in the charge and play kit (notice the name). Your controllers MS Rechargeable battery is trickle charged (usb) while you play. Obviously, your controller will charge up about twice as slow as it would if you weren't playing while it was charging.

yeah, the 40 hours is with full vibration...

i get about 60 hours with rumble on with my current wireless controller...i got about 3 month's out of my old wireless controller with rumble disabled...

and im not sure what nintendo and sony are going to do about the problem, but ms is going to include a cable so you can plug in your controller's when the batteries die or get low...

I guess they will have the same thing. It's not that hard to manufacture.

im still not convinced the "rechargable" kits will hold their charge over time...as with any rechargable product - each time you recharge it the power is less - a laptop battery lasts about 6-8months then needs replacing.

If your going wireless i think you have to expect to replace the rechargable batteries on a 6 month basis.

Ye, thats what im refering too - the rechargable battery given 30-40 recharges will last less and less time each time you rechanged eventually getting down to 30mins max which is pointless therefore you will need to get a new rechargable battery. I anticipate the period of time to reach a level of unusability to be 6-8months...

maybe, havent had much experience with rechargable AA Batteries.

But when you look at laptop, mobile phone and the original Ipod batteries all suffer from the above described problem.

The affects are more apparent when you charge the batteries continuously when not in use...if you wait for them to go completely flat and then give them a full charge they last for longer.
