This has me curious about things like the dashboard and what not.  If the Xbox 360 can function without the HDD, then where is that info stored?  BIOS, Flash memory?  If all the necessary information is inside the Xbox 360 and not in the HDD, then that would make it easier to get a non-Micr0soft HDD to work with it, correct?

Also, if not, then what would happen if you tried booting it up without a HDD plugged in?

an interesting question that i don't think anyone can truly answer yet.  however, at the very least, your saved games would be stored on the hdd if not the dashboard.   my guess is no since M$ would be wise to have the dashboard and other necessary functions on the hdd.  they will after all need to update and expand their services over time and a small flash memory bank would limit that.

They have said games and xbox live will not require a hard drive.  This is where I think their contract with M-Systems comes in.  An internal flash-based storage solution.

You can see it in one of the videos out there because they take it out to show you that its removable. I think that without the harddrive in the xbox360 youll still be able play the games, but it wont detect it so you wont be able to save on it, or play your soundtracks, and... .

edit: and you wont be able to play the original xbox games because they write a cache to the hd.

Like I have mentioned before in a previous post, it seems the xbox guide and dashboard are two different things. im guessing the dash is on the hdd and the guide is internal.
