Since Xbox Is A 128-bit Console...
« on: July 02, 2005, 07:07:00 PM »

The Xbox is actually a 32-bit console given that it uses an Intel x86 32-bit 733MHz processor. (bits don't matter *that* much anymore in consoles).

The new Xbox360 runs on IBM PowerPC processors, which I think are equivalent to the current Apple Mac G5's, therefore being a 64-bit processor.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

I dont think hes talking about the bits in the cpu.

Nintendo was 8 bit. Snes was 16 bit. N64 was, well, 64 bit. Etc.

I think you are right though about bits not being so important anymore, even if you meant it differently.

Also, remember the days whenif a new console was coming out, all you knew is that it would be better? Like I own a 16 bit snes   and Woah a nintendo 64 is coming out! 64 is better than 12 right?!!? Cool its 3d too!

It was so much simpler back then. Much less of us knew or cared about the performance of the console. The bits was basically all that most of us could interpret (comparison wise).

The thing is that much more of us are learning about tech and there is an increasgin amount of competition... so let the games begin (pun intended  cool.gif )

Actually he is talking about the bits in the CPU, that is the maximum size of a piece of data that the CPU and natively work with. The nintendo had an 8bit CPU, the Snes a 16 bit CPU, etc.  Later the consoles switched to the maximum word size that the CPU could handle.

Yeah, That is what I mean. So my question is rather how many bits are the Xbox 360´s CPU on?

I hate to say it, but we dont have 128bit CPUs, so that is flawed.

The thing to remember is that for numbers that every bit doubles the size of the number, so 8bits gives you 256, while 16 bits gives you 65536 or 32767 signed.

Think it was the Atari Jaguar that boasted it was 32 bit and was 2 x 16 bit engines ... or was it 64 bit and 2 x 32 bit engines ... I cant remember ... I feel old ...
