what was wrong with the emotion engine? I think the interest has to do with cost. Hd dvd is more likely going to be cheaper than blu ray.

-Potential for forward compatibility with current DVD players.

Ummm Blu-ray did it much better. Toshiba first made a 2 sided disc, one side a 4.7GB DVD and the other side a 15GB HD-dvd. After that $ony made a single sided blu-ray that did all that. It had 2 layers of 4.7GB DVD and two layers of 25GB blu-ray. Later toshiba is trying to catch up and as on now has made a single sided HD-dvd with one 4.7GB dvd layer and two 15GB HD-dvd layers.

Just pointing out that Blu-ray can do that also. beerchug.gif

I still think size dont matter and HD DVD just seems to have more going for it other than size.

Thax, good theory.  Sounds good and well thought out.

Anyway, I'd like to point out that if HD-DVD is included in the 360, it would be a huge blow to Sony.  It would most likely be the first format adopted, leaving Blu-Ray in the dust.  Plants would have already been converted to manufacturing HD-DVD and there would be dedicated players for them.  Plus, Blu-Ray woud be more expensive when it comes out in players, also causing it to fail.

Why do all M$ people love toshiba and HD-DVD? Am I the only one who didnt forget that Toshiba (not $ony) designed the emotion-engine? We all saw how great that was!  Toshiba is also a part of the trio that made the "Cell" chip, but when it comes to things for a M$ console we love them  rolleyes.gif

Well the 360 release date hasn't even been revealed to be on a specific day, except this holiday season sometime. Also it has only been recently that MS and Toshiba have collaborated on HD-DVD, Sony is using the next generation disc formats as a supposed advantage over 360 which must displease MS. Also the japanese developers desperately want a big capacity format as brought out as Team Ninja's Itagaki-san. The biggest reason that MS may change their stance on HD-DVD is this: HD-DVD will be available this holiday season when the 360 also debuts. One of the big reasons MS downplayed the blue laser disc drives was according to j allard "none of them are done yet" as the biggest reason the 360 wouldn't use a blue laser discs. Now with that not out of the question, and potential Toshiba taking care of some of the manufacturing costs and development, it is a real possiblilty. We won't really know until later this summer and in August with the annual MS event X05 when the expected news about price, release date and so forth is announced. I would bet Toshiba is pushing for this and wouldn't be suprised if infact launch 360s are HD-DVD.

Why not just surprise everyone and go with HVD format 3.9 TB (yes 3.9 terabytes) of storage capacity.  That is 80 times capacity of Blu-Ray.

why not? because HVD isn't even CLOSE to being finished, the test drives cost upwards of $1000 just to make, and the blank discs (which are _extremely limited_ in number) cost as much from manufacturers as a pressed, completed DVD game does to a consumer
