Toshiba Says Yes To 360 Hd-dvd
« on: June 30, 2005, 12:12:00 PM »

According to Kotaku:
QUOTE
Oh, and the Toshiba folks also spilled the beans on HD-DVD and the Xbox 360, saying that the next-gen console will use the new format for its media and whining about how MS is dragging their feet on the official announcement.

This goes along with the announcement that MS will licence XBox Software for use in other products. I think they are waiting for 2 reasons...1st when they do make the announcement they want to have more polished games to go with it...and 2nd they want to hold off as long as possible to gain momentum from the announcement for the holiday season...

Here is the full text:

Here’s an interesting tid-bit: Toshiba was showing off their Fall line-up the other day and demoed a HD-DVD that was being created in conjunction with MS. This, of course, was well before the official Xbox software announcement, but now attendees are starting to wonder if references to the device’s ability to download games and play them may be tied into the Xbox software deal.

Could Toshiba be working on a HD-DVD Xbox? It would certainly explain why MS seems so willing to drop the original console like a bad habit, maybe they are making room for a new, fancier iteration of the original.

Oh, and the Toshiba folks also spilled the beans on HD-DVD and the Xbox 360, saying that the next-gen console will use the new format for its media and whining about how MS is dragging their feet on the official announcement.

For what it’s worth, MS officials told me that the week before E3 and reconfirmed it when I called them back days later. (Who’s eating paste now Joel, stick that in your daily dose of Kielbasa and smoke it.)

Please take this with a grain of salt, it is posted in the same section as the following items:

"My super-secret console-licking moles have unearthed a few more Xbox 360 gems worthy of posting. OK, actually the mole doesn’t lick consoles and really it’s just one gem. Apparently, the Xbox 360 will be sold at two price points. For $299 you will get the base system which doesn’t have a hard-drive or backwards compatibility. For another $100 you get the system bundled with some sort of optional add-on which will include WebTv."

"My sources tell me that the most recent rumors swirling around the 360 is that it probably won’t have the capability to play original Xbox games."

Grain of salt taken, but I still think there is a strong possibility of this happening for more then the 360 but for HD-DVD itself...if it comes out before Blu Ray players and gets a solid base of customers then more studios/hardware manufacturers jump on board and it hurts the chances of Blu Ray succeding...

i wish this was true but know knows. bill was talking about hd-dvd also. maybe they keep saying there wont be hd-dvd so it could be a big thing when it launchs.

i think if Toshiba was smart they would sell them the hd-drive at a major loss. its worth the risk to push the format. it will be a big blow to blu-ray if ms has it on the xbox. so if anyone works at Toshiba.
Give us our HD-DVD in the xbox!

about the back-compat comment from Kotaku, the back-compat announcement at E3 was a HUGE SURPRISE from MS, NO ONE KNEW!  even EGM went to press saying that the 360 wouldn't have it.

as for the toshiba HDDVD thing... I think if it were true, Kotaku would have had a MUCH bigger announcement about it.  that last part was probably just a bit of satire, though MS is getting good about surprises with the 360 (back-compat, SquareEnix, etc) and MN has been hinting about surprises he can't talk about on his blog.

I have to agree with thax. If they really accepted HD-DVD he would have a larger announcment about it. I think Toshiba was pushing M$ to adopt it and M$ has been stalling and not giving them an answer. Hopefuly they don't I don't want my 360 costing more. Anyways that not having BC statement is bull, They wouldn't say they were going to have it and then make it an add-on that would be a huge mistake for them.

This is a very interesting situation.  The fact that MS really isn't coming out and saying much about whether they're accepting the hd-dvd format kind of reminds me of the situation with whether Square/Enix had supported the X360.  When people asked whether Square/Enix was on board MS really veared away from the answer and basically stated vaguely that there was no support from them and that there were no new announcements to be made.  Then out of nowhere, BOOM, MS announces that Square/Enix will be fully backing them.  People thought that back-comp wouldn't be added, MS really avoided the answer and said that there were no new announcements the, BOOM, MS announces back-comp for their system.  This seems to be the same situation.  MS is really avoiding fully announcing anything regarding the hd-dvd drive and the X360.  Possibly just waiting for the big BOOM?  I think there is still time for MS to put the drive in since they havent' started mass producing the systems' parts yet and developers still have a ways to go before they have finished games.  Even so, since hd-dvd is back-comp to dvds developers could just make their games like they are now and then when future games are created could make games for the hd-dvd format.  I really dont' think teh cost of the system will go up much with the inclusion of this new tech or not, since production of these disks are only suppose to be about 10% more cost-wise than normal dvds, and tools won't have to be reformed for manufacturing.  I think it's just a matter of whether Toshiba is willing to sell MS the disk drives for dirt cheap and take the loss so MS doesn't have to fiddle too much with the final price of the console.  I think if they're going to have a chance to put it in the console as standard, they're going to have to make their decision in the next month (more like THIS month).  Still a chance, although it seems more and more unlikely as the weeks go by.

If Toshiba does decide to bite the bullet (and make Blu-Ray suffer) by putting HD-DVD in the 360, then MS has nothing to worry about.  Games can still come in DVD9 format and they will still be 12X read so there is no difference there.  When 2X DVD drives came out a few years back, they still read CD's at 48X.  The ONLY thing that the HD-DVD drive would allow is playback of movies and futureproofing 360 games.  Games only need DVD9 now, but what will games 5 years from now need?

I still like the idea of a DVD drive only and saving some cash at the register, but I'd also like my 360 to compete in 3 years.  If MS says no to Toshiba's deal... no sweat, I'll buy an HD-DVD drive next year.  If they say yes to the drive in 360... great, I'll buy HD-DVD movies instead.  It's a wash either way.

I think the reason why we havent heard anything from MS is for the same reason we havent heard about BC and squaresoft until late. MS just wasnt SURE about whether they could provide dev support from square and BC for all games. So im guessing MS is not sure what they want to do with HD dvd. I think theyre not sure if they want it for an add on or have it built in. Theyre worried If it will negatively affect the price and the mass production and more importantly; the launch date. Theyre scared it might scar their perfect plans IMHO.

I hope it's close to the truth. If MS has been planning that all along then that means they would have a way to deliver the HD-DVD drive AND keep costs down.

Toshiba needs the 360 to have HD-DVD more than MS does  wink.gif

The one thing you said that really piqued my interest is that MS has released the name of nearly EVERY manufacturer of their parts EXCEPT the optical drive.  It certainly begs the question "WHY".  I hope you're right if for no other reason than to see Sony put another notch on their "Shit We Make That Failed" chaukboard.  wink.gif

Why do all M$ people love toshiba and HD-DVD? Am I the only one who didnt forget that Toshiba (not $ony) designed the emotion-engine? We all saw how great that was!  Toshiba is also a part of the trio that made the "Cell" chip, but when it comes to things for a M$ console we love them  rolleyes.gif
