Ps3 Aiming For X360 Compatibility?

" SPOnG had a meeting with a high-ranking executive from a platform holder last week. We had beers in the sun. It was all very pleasant. During our chat about the ins and outs of the games industry, we were told something that sounded too incredible even for our news pages.

“I saw a Sony PlayStation 3 presentation slide last week,” he said. “Guess what was on it.” We guessed a picture of our staff looking dubious. It wasn’t that. We guessed a PlayStation 3. We were told, “Of course a PlayStation 3 but what else…?” We gave up. With a crafty wink we were told, “A PlayStation 3 linking out to all sorts of things, being compatible with them all in some way. Guess what one of the things was.” We said we didn’t like guessing anymore and just wanted to know. “An Xbox 360! In some way, Sony is planning on making the PlayStation 3 ‘talk’ to the 360, though exactly what they are planning wasn’t explained.”

Our source was 100% explicit about what he saw and was 100% confident in his conviction. “The slide was shown to many delegates at the ELSPA summit. It was on screen behind the stage for a long time. I can’t believe no one noticed the Xbox 360 in the corner.”

Neither could we. It just seemed too far-fetched.

Then we noticed this article appear on respected blog Engadget. It reads:

Be at peace, gamers, for rumor has it that the Xbox 360’s hotly discussed extensive 3rd party hardware integration and support will include—no, you definitely did not see this coming—methods for allowing PSP and DS users to play MS games online with their devices through the 360, and with one another. Of course, this is completely unconfirmed, but sometimes bizarre love triangles really aren’t that bizarre. Bring on the unity. Feel the love.

So what to make of it all? The concept of almost complete cross-company hardware integration seems less than likely to say the least, yet rumour from some decent sources says otherwise. SPOnG right now has absolutely no way of knowing and absolutely no way of finding out; unless of course, something leaks in the next few months. We’ll monitor the situation - we're sure you will too. Let us know your thoughts, as ever, in the forum below. "

Well seeing as they don't have the 360 hardware, it's just a little propaganda toy. But that is just my opinion. But maybe they think it would be easy? blink.gif I could see the 360 doing something with the ps3 through live update, but imo it's very doubtful.

i think this all could be a way to try to get back at ms for being able to use the psp on the 360. i know if i was sony i would be pissed that my system is being used with my direct competitor. i think there could be some basic connections. maybe something a comp could do or something.

Did it say HOW the 360 connected to the PS3?  Nope.  I'd guess that one could be the passthru for the other so as not to consume too many inputs.  i.e: The HDMI cable of the 360 (if the damn thing ever sees daylight) could plug into the second HDMI port of the PS3 and then pass thru to the other port.  If you think about how many HDMI ports even the most expensive HDTV's have, this isn't so far fetched.  Then again, I don't know if HDMI ports are bi-directional so I can't say one way or the other.

OR PS3 could mooch music saved on the 360 in the same way MS is planning on doing with the PSP.  It's not going to control anything... just index the music and play it over LAN lines.

It would still be pretty cool if it registered "All your console are belong to us" tho.  laugh.gif

i dont think that will ever happen. since ms uses live i dont think its possible. i think Ickypoopy hit it right on. the only thing ps3 will do with the xbox 360 any other pc could do the same thing.

Following this same logic, why cant we play Burnout 3 with PS2 users?  The game is run from EA's server not from the normal Live servers.

I thought PSO was played on external (read non-Live) servers?  Couldn't you also play with people on the PC?  Im pretty sure you could...

Did you all forget MS' E3 presentation where they showed a slide with PSP interfacing with the XBOX360 and everyone thought it was pretty funny. This is just a jab back at that slide.
