I was wondering if anyone knows if the DVD-Rom is going to be a tray or a load-in player that you find in car stereos or some new dvd players? It looks like a load-in player and I was told if that was the case it would cut down on "dirty disc" errors if there are going to be any. Personally I think that would be a cool option, and it looks like tha PS3 will have it, and the Revolution is rumored to have this option as well. Just wondering and if there was any speculations going around.

It's a tray loader, if you look on the side of the gray bar where the disk would go in it had an eject button with an arrow on it and it looks like that gray bar would slide out and be the tray, I just looked it up and everywhere is saying it's a tray loader also. PS3 and Revolution use slot loaders. It's unfourunate too because slot loaders do cut down on dirty disk errors and lower the chance of scratching a disk.

That's a shame. I thought maybe the face would swing down and you could load-in the disc, or instead of the dvd bezel being on the tray it would swing down and an inner tray would come out. Oh well, just another option that's not going to be added. Thanks.  biggrin.gif

I copletely agree with you. and for everyone that wants a tray loader what happens if the motor gets stuck while ur putting ur dvd in and u cant get it out? i would think having to line up your dvd just right would cause more scratchs by missing then a regular tray loader.

Actually slot loaders are easier to load your DVD's into than tray loaders and they are almost the same price, here is an article from IGN before it was revealed.

QUOTE
Slot-loading Drive
Now we're getting a little optimistic here, but hey, we can do whatever we want, so there. We'd love it if the Xbox 2 had a slot-loading drive instead of the same old boring tray or flip-top drive. It's more or less an aesthetic wish, but it does have some practical benefits. For example, games will be much easier to load, lowering the chances of ruining the disc and/or tray. Apple users have it on laptops, Pioneer makes a slick drive for the PC, and almost every car CD player is slot-loading. And everyone loves it yet we still haven't seen it on a console. Give it to us for the sake of beauty.

Will it happen? Not likely? Why? We're not really sure, but we get the feeling that it won't happen. Could it be cost? Probably not, as slot-loading PC drives are about the same price as a normal drive. Could it be aesthetics? Definitely not. Just look at the praise any PC/laptop gets that includes a slot-loading drive. Please, be bold and give us a slick-looking console with a slot-loading drive.

We're not talking slot-loading blu-ray, and it really doesn't costany more than regulars drive. That's all I have on my PC; 1 DVD slot-load and 1 Light Scribe Dual-Layer DVD slot-load, the first one was on 2 dollars more than the one I wanted, the second 10 dollars cheaper than what I wanted too. I would worry about missing the loader and scratching the disc, nor a motor burning out any time remotely soon of halving it. It also would cut down on "dirty disc" errors.  The fact now is that it's still a tray-loader now matter what. Who knows, maybe a nice inspired mod *hint, hint* when 360 comes out to put a slot loader,  or a PS3 blu-ray slot. I'm sure it would be possible. For now it will not change so no dice.

PS:
If I had the money to throw away on a PS3 I would rip it apart almost as fast as the box, just to see whats inside for myself.

I was wondering how thick are the Blu-Ray discs that Sony will use for the PlayStation 3. Because the only pictures of Blu-Ray discs I have seen seem to me that the discs are 1 cm thick. Can some one provide a link showing how thick the Blu-Ray discs will be? Or it is just like a regular DVD? My question is how can Sony have a Slot-loader if the only pictures I have seen of Blu-Ray look like the discs are 1 cm? With the protection, like those UMDs for the PlayStation Portable.

Here are the pictures where it seems to me that the Blu-Ray discs will be half a centimeter in thickness.

So yeah? How can they have Slot-loaders? They might have to have a special one, which should cost moola, or $$, or money..

It's been my experience that slot-loaders break A LOT. Tray-loaders are just much more durable. Do in part because the tray-loaders in general have less moving parts. Not to mention you can't use smaller footprint discs in a slot-loader.

I'd personally take a tray-loader over a slot-loader any day  beerchug.gif

I agree with TwistedSymphony.  I had a Pioneer DVD-ROM that was slot load and it sucked.  I couldn't use Mini-CDR's and it finally broke when a disc was *jammed* in (you'd be surprised how hard it is to slot load Audio CD's while drunk laugh.gif).  My truck's slot load works well, so maybe it was just my stupidity that broke it, but I'd prefer tray load / beer holder DVD drives.

In re: to BDR discs, Sony doesn't need the protective covers anymore now that TDK has made a scratch resistant polymer.  They are the same size as regular DVD's... they are just burned with Blue laser instead of red.

Well, "NumberOneRB", I don't give a shit as long my games work, they play great and they look amazing, really it's just all about the games.

P.S. By the way, PS3 is now in a price range of 400 dollars to 500 dollars.
