Xbox360 As Pc Replacement?
« on: June 23, 2005, 02:51:00 AM »

From looking at the specs of the XBOX360, and then looking at the specs of my home PC, I got to thinking that the XBOX360 is likely more powerfull then my home machine.  BTW I run a P4 3.4, 1Gb RAM, Gefore 6800 PCI-X, so its not like I'm running as P.O.S machine here.

So what I'm thinking is, IF the mod scene is able to get x86 OS's running on a 360, or MS chooses to release a version of "Longhorn" for the 360, do you think it will replace your home PC?  The only bottleneck I see is low amount of system RAM, which "may" be upgradable if the original rumors of MS releasing more then one console version are true.

Perhaps a 360 PC?  With upgradable RAM, comes with Keyboard, Mouse and a copy of Longhorn for XBOX..

*I did a search and didn't find anything directly related to this, so I apologise if it has already been covered.

When they crack it, it's entirely possible to run windows XP on it. I think it would replace my computer if it wasn't a pain in the neck to upgrade it's ram like it is for the xbox. I'm interested in getting Mac OSx running on it. It would be better than my machine and talk about a portable PC, it would be great for lan parties!

Unfortunately guys Avenger 2.0 is right. You don't see people going around with XP on their current Gen Xbox do you? and that uses x86 architecutre... Unless you have the source for the OS you can't run it outside of emulation (and emulation kills your speed so then whats the point). The only reason Linux runs is because the source is freely available and people can re-compile it specifically for the box.

Before you get all disappointed why would you want to run windows anyway? The only benefit the enormous power would give you is for gaming and  ohmy.gif It plays games just how it is. Couple that with the fact that MS is A. Allowing Keyboard and Mouse support. B. Encouraging PC developers to release their games on the 360 as well, and giving them the tools to make it easy to do so. and C. allowing for multiplayer across PC and Xbox.

Why exactly do you need to run Windows as an OS... and OS that is a complete resource hog and runs constantly in the background while gaming. Not to mention the Windows games you'd be playing are optimized for NOTHING in particular just able to run across varying platforms while 360 specific games are optimized for the 360 ONLY.

I guess I'll just have to steal the Source from XP then tongue.gif . Owell, I don't care if it's a resource hog, the reason I would want it as a PC is so I can run my games on it my PC canrun app's and stuff just find there would be no point in me turning it into a PC other than gaming and most games don't run on linux, well most of the good ones. Would we be able to run windows 98 like we can on the xbox? or is that also under emulation?

Well, I didn't really mean it as still doing both, what I meant was "Modding a 360 to run an x86 OS for use as a home PC"  not "Modding a 360 to run an x86 OS for use as BOTH a console and a PC".  I would buy a console exclusively to replace my home PC IF it ran an OS, preferably a version of "longhorn" for XBOX.  I "could" make do with WinXP for XBOX as well, but I would never bother with ANY other OS.

But, like I said before, it would hinge on:
A)  MS releasing a version of Longhorn for XBOX
cool.gif  A Version of the 360 that allows the upgrade of RAM
C)  Whether the 360 actually is a powerfull as it seems to be

Bonus item would be:
A)  Ability to replace the DVD Drive with a DVD Burner

What are you going on about ?
Did you not listen to what people have said here ?
You want to mod a PPC 3 core CPU based, Hardware DRM (at the chip level) console to to run an x86 based OS ?
This is also provided it gets modded, if ever.

The ONLY way you will ever run an x86 OS, is through SLOW emulation. And what in god's name will be the whole point of that ?

Why ?  blink.gif
What can it offer, that a PC cannot ?
Never heard of a HTPC ?

And it gets even dumber. You will NEVER see a version of WinXP on Xbox. NEVER, PERIOD.
Stop talking bollox.

NEVER going to happen. Most of MS's business structure lies around Windows. Their profits have been made with Windows, NOT Xbox, which was a huge loss to the company. Now you want them to release an OS for a Console, which would jeopardize their PC side ?

QUOTE

Not going to happen. I'll even bet it wont be moddable to upgrade RAM, either.

Yes it is.

QUOTE

IF, it gets hacked, AND a version of Linux appears with working DVD writer support, then Maybe

that will be the fucking nice  biggrin.gif

if the X360 can be used as a PC (to do at least basic PC function as Internet browsing, Office application etc) then it will sell like hot cakes. It will possibility end the console wars. $ony will be washing the floors of M$ offices tongue.gif
