Xbox Media Center Extention

http://www.MS.com/windowsxp/mediace...extenderkit.asp

When this comes out will people start using this offical Xbox Media Center or will continue to use the monthly builds. Im pretty sure it will have a fancy looking Interface like the Media Center Pc's. And they will try to out do or even steal some of the cool ideas we have seen already.  <

What I really want to know is. Is XPMC a 64bit OS? Or are they just putting the software on 64bit machines to bump up the price for no reason whatsoever?

[rant]
This really ticks me off. I wonder who there target market is? Models? Models who can't read and have people who do their home appliance shopping for them? I mean, look at that page. It just TEXT, text, text, text.

It's not going to have half the functionality of XBMC. Will it even support Divx? Xvid? Quicktime? It certainly won't be free.

And the name kind of implies that you can only network it to a Media Center PC. How many people have PCs runing MCE?  <

Since we're not even suppossed to have access to the coding used/modified to make XBMC, it's not exactly stealing.  More like stealing back.

So no, there's nothing that can be done.

Now did they steal someone's idea?

Absolutely.  <

Well the xbox media player had started this whole thing but even that was based on windows xp media center edition. Now m$ sees how great that app was and wants to make a port of the OS and bring it to the xbox.  At a cost of coarse and also for people with no mod-chips. We dont know how much functionality this extender will have but if im correct about m$ they will want to show off power and muscle and want to make it better then XBMC.  <

Yes we can view this as a chain of events the really blurs who is truly responsible for any kind of media center on the X.

Will MS want to show off power and muscle?  Definately. But I don't think you will find divx support, because that would be an industry no-no, as divx is considered primarily a medium for ripping (corporate read: stealing ) DVDs.

There are some things that MS will not include in their version because it would be considered bad business to watchdogs.

Bottom line:  I have no doubt they will try to improve upon the orginal.  However, they will not be able to include all the features because of businesses (like entertainment industry, which often works with M$) will be a little put out.  <

The media center extender is actually pretty old news.  I doubt it will be able to compete with XBMC in the mod community, but it will help to provide similar fuctionality to those xbox owners who have no desire to mod.  I know lots of people who don't have the time or knowledge to mod their box but would love a media center, and I think this is great for them.

I think that the bigger worry for the XBMC project is that it shares it's name with this official MS product.  When this puppy hits market and MS realizes that googling "Xbox Media Center" produces an illegal product at the top of the results list they may get kind of pissed off.

If I recall correctly, MS originally wanted the xbox to be more of a set-top/media center type box.  They spoke to several demographic groups and "industry experts" who all told them that it's a great idea that will never sell.  They advised MS to stick to games for the time being.  Four years ago that was probably good advice.  Today I can't imagine buying a console that doesn't stream movies from my PC.  So is MS really stealing anything?  Do you honestly believe that in a company of thousands of people nobody ever said "Hey, this thing would make a great media PC!"?  They're just catching up with their original plan of action, albeit very late IMO.  I would speculate that if they had done this 2 years ago their market share would be much higher and there would be a slightly smaller mod community.

Just my 2c.

PV thats a great point about the name of our fave xbox software. I can see a consequence is that MS stops turning a blind eye to servers that host binaries. Maybe its time to think about a name change. OTOH, big fucking deal. There's allways bitorrent.  <
