DVD9 seems like a limited amount of space for game developers... is this the first time that a next generation console has used the same type/size of media as the previous?

Current compression techniques allow those 4-5 gig games in half. Anyways, how about that Iomega thing where they got 800 gigs on dvd using compression? Anybody can give me some info on this? If this is true then how does it affect the blu-ray/hd-dvd situation?

But does that mean that current dvd drives are compatible? meaning MS couldn't patch something to offer compatibility to this later on? theoretically

The Iomega thing isn't even an issue, that technology would use the same wavelength lasers, but it would require extreme precision. A firmware update to tell the laser to distinguish between variable depths would not likely be enough. As you increase the capacity of the disc you increase the needed precision in a direct relationship. Ot stands to reason that curent drives can't distinguish such fine differences in depth as a result of cost cutting. It also seems obvious that vibrations would greatly increase problems of misreading as your need for sensitivity increases. When this technology comes around it will require special drives. I can guarantee it.

sorry if this a dumb question but i havent bought a pc game in a long long time, are pc games even made on dvd yet, cause if not i dont see why dvd9 wouldnt hold enough data for next gen games, all the space for our nice graffix, but doesnt memory, cpu and gpu play a part in that as well

lol now what would you have done if 5-10 years ago people had said "fuk the dvd ill stick with my beta player" change has to happen, its the way it has to be, wether you like it or not. Sony can have there blu ray, M$ has not announced its plans on HD DVD yet so lets not make presumptions, if they use it, great, awesome, more power to them, if not, then im sure they will have good reason, if its economicly suitable to them, theres no reason for them not to, if they dont think the market is going anywhere then they wont, lets face it, bill gates did not become the richest man on the planet being an idiot, and J allard is no high school dropout, so they know what there doin. Also if you want any info on the next gen formats i reccommend reading (i hate to say this but there articles are pretty good, simple and to the point)
http://electronics.h...com/blu-ray.htm
http://www.disctroni...chnology/hddvd/
http://www.blu-ray.com/

i know its mostly on blu ray, but its harder to find stuff on HD DVD, ah well, theres always google, (and please stop with the I heards, instead of hearing, do some research, read some official sites, see if its tru before you post it)
