iii) Apple switched from the standard PowerPC to Intel due to the lack of a power efficient processor for notebooks.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the CELL supposed to be the next generation processor after the PPC G5?

If this is the case Apple might be going with Intel simply because they don't like the CELL?

Otherwise wouldn't you expect them to only use the intel chips in the notebooks if the heat/power savings was the biggest benefit?

Another idea might be that it puts them in direct competition with windows in that they could make it so any x86 based PC can run MacOS.

just some theories.

i hate when people come in here without any facts to back up their bullshit theories they come up with when their smoking rocks. Then its funny when they get owned by someone who knocks them out with one punch.

It's the OS that mostly effects what programs can and can't run, going to an X86 platform you wont be able to run anymore than you could on the PPC platform because it will still be running a MacOS.

There are 2 reasons Apple is going to x86 (and they've both been covered).

1. the X86 architecture is less power hungry and works better with laptops
2. the CELL is the next chip-set after the current PPC G5 and Apple was disappointed with it. so rather than use the IBM CELL they're going to Intel Pentiums.
