Everything has already been thought of so originality has died.
There in nothing more that is a cause for innovation in FPS of late.
well the innovation now come in how the games utilize the concepts we have as well as the new tech that becomes available...
Gears of War seems interesting to me; trying to combined FPS with Adventure Horror. and the idea of a cover based shooter where you can use destructive environments as your cover.
Prey seems to have some interesting concepts as well with the whole using gravity to change which way is up as well as the ability to leave your body. etc.
Unreal Championship was interesting in the way it tried to mesh mêlée fighter combat with traditional FPS combat.
They're not new concepts but they're using them in new and interesting ways.
As for New Tech:
Watching the Prey demo I saw this mutated creature lunge at the player.. it was killed then I saw another mutated creature come around the corner... and it looked identical to the last one.
With the 360's ability to do things like generate random environments from high level descriptions in the next gen there should be no reason we ever see the same exact mutated creature (zombie, townsfolk, etc.) twice. AFAIK none of the new games save Oblivion are planning to make use of this tech yet. I think it could be beneficial to an FPS type game. Every monster is unique. If some mutated creature has his right arm growing out of his forehead... there is no goddamn reason the next one also has his right arm growing out of his forehead, both with cuts, scars, etc. in the same places.
They could use the tech to generate entire new levels on the fly, entire new creatures on the fly, etc. you could have a game that never ended, never playing the same level twice, never facing the same zombie twice... etc. Heck they could even go as far as to generate personalities on the fly. One zombie is overly aggressive while another zombie is more defensive and strategic etc.
I'm sure there will be other kinds of innovations that can be used with that type of technology as well as other new things with other new techs that will be available.
These are the kinds of innovations we should start seeing... and there are many more innovations that will become possible in the next generation, no one has thought of them yet and that's what makes them innovative
