Setting Up Volume Control On The Xbox Remote

Is there a way to map the volume control onto my xbox remote. Or better yet could i possibly use my xbox remote to control my stereos volume. And if so to either of these could you point me in the direction of how i might do this.

I highly suggest going and buying a universal remote. I got a OneForAll at best buy and it was only 20 bucks. Its THE best remote i've ever had in my long entertainment center career quest for perfect unity ;)

It has tivo buttons for my tivo, controls my Tv, dvd, reciever, xbox, and cable box. Its so great, and the best part is that it LOOKS nice, and has a nice layout. A first for universal remotes. I love it. It isn't a learning remote, but it will allow you to MOVE buttons, so i moved my right and left nav buttons to chapter next and previous buttons, and have managed to get my xbmc to work veryyyyyyy nicely with my entertainment center. With a little creativity you can get this setup running extremly nice. And is MUCH better and more intuitive than the terrible (RCA) Xbox remote.

Check it out. In my opinion, everyone that has an xbmc should have this remote, especially Tivo Owners..

FYI All for one remotes are made by a company called UEI...

UEI uses a interface called JP1

This jp1 interface has been hacked and you can reprogram the remote completly...

I am working on a config for the 8011w (8device from wallmart... 36$ canadian) so that EVERY button will work with xbmc to control a specific function (yah no more limited to the number of buttons on that crap xbox remote)

FYI if you get really into this remote you can program it to do crazy macros, have different commands on a button depending if you press, long press or double press the button (3 signals per button)

These remotes are amazingly flexable...

for more info on it check out www.hifi-remote.com
but a word of warning it is quite complicated sometimes... so unless you have decent technological understanding your going to get REALLY lost REALLY fast

Ill post my config when i get it done.

If you have a different remote you should be able to edit it to your liking

Like I said at the top, i am able to "move" buttons on the remote that i use. So i kind of have that freedom. I mapped the back button to the tivo's quick back button for example. So the remote feels a little more natural. I can't stress enough that a new remote, and i really suggest mine, i love it, makes a world of difference in using xbmc. It feels a lot more legitamate with a real remote.

Even though it might have been asked before: has anybody tried the non-original MS remotes? Do they work with xbmc?

I have a Mitsubishi 55' HDTV with netcommand.  Netcommand has built in support for the xbox remote.  I never had a TV remote like this before.  Basicly I use my TV remote for every device I have in my setup.  The remote sends the commands to the TV, then the TV sends the command to the device.  I never have to switch inputs on the remote. One remote to rule them all.  I don't even use my Xbox controller anymore.  The Mitsu remote controls everything from evox to xbmc.  All I need now is a way to power on the Xbox from the remote and I would be in heaven.

wierd... how does that work? Does it have an IR emitter that is sent out from the tv? how does it control the other devices? And if you don have to change the device on the remote, how does it know you mean rewind on the xbox and not the dvd player?

As i was saying... all for one remotes have this jp1 interface...  Your remote is a All for One. Open up the battery cover and you will see a 6 pin connector. That is the programming interface.

If you dl the software and order/make a cable for it... then you can program, move keys, create new device layouts, and upload extenders (extends the remotes OS to have more functionality)

It is much easyer than Magic - 9 - 2 - 2 all the time... its a little windows app that makes everything SO much easyer and lets you do things not possible with only the remote...

Your pushing your remote but there are many under the All for One line that work well... Yours is a  6 device remote (probly a 6011, others may need more, mine is a 8011w which is a 8 device remote (w means from walmart)

Many OEM remotes are JP1 compatable too, the digital cable terminals out here are, as are replay tvs and many cable boxes. Check yours by opening the battery cover and checking for the 6 pin connector.

## Edit ##

Oh and seven5,
On your remote do you have more than the original number of buttons on your new remote ( have you created buttons on your 'all in one remote' that do not exist on  the xbox remote? That is what I am currently working on so that im not limited to the number of buttons on the xbox remote... i will be mapping all the buttons and creatin a new keymap.xml for the remote.

what do we get?
well for example say we have 20 buttons on the xbox remote... and currently their all assigned a function in the keymap.xml file

but damn... i want to have a button to oh say next track for mp3s (not sure if this is on the remote already... just a example)

darnit... i setup my remote using the code for the xbox but it only has thoes 20 buttons on it... so what am i to do?

easy!
using the jp1 interface ill assign all the other buttons that arnt used a new code (number up to 255 actually) and im working on being sure not to conflict with other RCA equipment (as i have a rca dvd player and tv as well) then since there are 30 more buttons on this universal remote i now have 50 buttons to use for xbmc insted of only 20 like the remote you get from MS

how can we add a button that isn't already there though? I mean, xmbc has functions for everything that it can do and has it work for the xbox remote assinging it to buttons.

You speak of adding a new function, well that seems easy for the remote, but how can you just recreate a function for xbmc to use? Like say, a Kai button. or something like that? I dont see how you can do that.

I have the same remote as seven5.  How do you program this remote to work with the infrared port plugged in to the xbox?  What is the code or how do I find the code?  What button (DVD, VCR, etc) do you have the xbox infrared port mapped to work with?

Thanks!!

i bought some 3rd party XBOX remote/dongle off EBay

works ok, but i'd like to be able to use a universal remote i curently own

is there any way to figure out what the the program code is for this generic XBox remote/dongle?

it will NOT work w/ RCA codes

my universal remote does have a way to search through all the program codes, but it requires hitting the Power button, which obviously has no function on the XBox
