Samba Server?
« on: May 24, 2004, 10:56:00 AM »

I asked a question in the evox forum on whether evox would some day provide a Samba Server.

My reasoning was that now I have a large HDD in my XBOX, I've off-loaded some videos to it - but would still like to watch them from another PC (for example, the kids might want to watch something on their PC upstairs 'streamed' from the XBOX)

I was told XBMC provides this (a samba server) - I think not, but hope I'm wrong!

Now, I have XBMC installed (currently using 2004-04-19) but I'm sure I've seen nothing about this in the config file.

I've tried connecting to \\192.168.2.111 (my xbox static address) - but not even a sniff.

If there is a way to share from the XBOX via Samba, how would you address / map the shares?

XBMC does not support a Samba server at this point in time.  <

Thanks for the reply.

Do you know of any app / util / dash replacement that would provide the facility I require?

I believe Linux has an SMB server.  <

i have NOT installed linux on my xbox, but ive installed linux many times on a PC
and ive install gentoo many times on PC's

So for a small install of gentoox, asumming its somewhat like installing on a PC, just install the base install, followed by a system logger, if you choose, then install samba
ul have a small install of gentoo with a samba server, having only samba, base install.. (which is just a few services and basic executables)

Perhaps someone who has installed gentoox can verify/drop what im saying...  <

I just spotted this...
  http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/gentoo-share-drive.php
... from the title (Using Gentoo Linux for the XBox to share drives (v0.1)) it looks like it might be what i need.

Anyone done this?  <
