I have my Xbox wired to my wireless router, with my laptop wireless in another room - i.e. same scenario as you.
I strongly recommend using Samba as Relax is no longer recommended by XBMC devs. But using Samba, I have perfect streaming from my wireless laptop to my Xbox for both music and videos - and I mean *smooth* and fast.
Samba is the way to go.  <

Samba 3.0.4 is built into the latest versions of XBMC - there is, of course, a new version of XBMC almost daily now! ;) Just set yr your required folders to be shared in Win XP - no need to install Samba on XP.
I have just installed the latest 21-5 build and it works very well.
Feel free to ask me any Q's regarding setting it up - I must admit I had to read a *lot* of posts before I got the hang of it, but now I couldn't live without it!  <

I use a router and a hub.

Router is in the computer room with various cat5 cables snaking out to various areas of the house.

Hub is in the living room serving X-Box and Audiotron.  <
