I have an xbox that overheats and shuts off also. Its a 1.0 and I have bought a cooler fan for the side with the PSU and the Nvida chip heat sink from llamma.com and it still shuts off. So now I just open the window and face the side of the xbox with the dvd drive out the window and let the other side fan run for a while before I play and then I will work fine. Not exactaly a good solution but it works except  the DVD drive doesnt seem to like the cold so it is only good for playing off the hard drive. I would consider this a temporary solution only. Good luck

M$ spent about 25 million dollars designing the airflow on the xbox and when you add fans or leave the top off or drives out it wont run any cooler and in alot of cases runs much hotter. All you can really do is tweak the fan speed in bios, add better thermal compound and maybe a heatsink on the mcpx chip.

Are both your heat sinks on correctly? If the chips and heatsinks don't make contact then it would overheat quickly.
Also I read a while back that people were having problems like this with other versions and all they did was press on the cpu heatsink an conculded that it was a dodgy factory solder point.

In unleashX dashboard you can but in a temperature threshold setting however I don't know if this will over ride the bios temperature.

Have you tried to run a disc from boot. May be it is something to do with your dashboard. This would overide it.
If non of that works then you will have to find someone who can rewrite the bios to not have a automatic shut down.

One thing is certain - you xbox is shutting down to rpotect it self from heat damage whether it is hot or not.

for my box, i use mxm and it reports the temp as still less than 47 degrees celsius... which is normal... unless the sensor itself is screwed...

anyone knows where is this sensor located on the board?

did you test out with the stock Xbox HDD???  I solved  my problem of random shutdowns by replacing the power supply, apparently, it wasn't strong enough to handle the aftermarket HDD.

Your HDD may have some slight permanent damage.  So yes, try it with the stock HDD.  You can also throw your XBox HDD in a PC and do maintenance on it.

Mmm, in my case my Xbox has it's original HDD, so I'm beggining to think some solding got messed up. That's all I can think of... :S

sad.gif

here is what i'm currently thinking of

1) failing temp censor ?
2) failing powersuply ?
3) dust ?
4) already tried another dvd drive.. didnt work
5) Already tried boosting up the fan speed wich made it crash even faster (power problem?!)
6) i soddert the modchip with 2 leads to some capasator .. mayb i overheated them and now they are broke ?!
7) the cpu isnt getting hot at all..

when i turn on the xbox.. and view the temp its about 48c .. wich is good..
just before the xbox turns bad the temp reads 500c +

what the h*ll is going on ?  uhh.gif
