How interesting.... another Dotson with the same problem! We dont have a popular name u know!

I have noticed the same problem with a good friends box I did a while back. When I was putting everything back together after the install, I didnt have top on or the HD or DVD Drive placed in the box and while transferring his saved games back, it did the same thing! Just went blank and the LED started flashing.  The power button did not work for some reason, so I took it all back apart and realized I did not plug the fan back in. His xbox is a 1.0 with a SmartXX chip (pinheader install.) Only thing I can think of other than the fan or overheating, was when I soldered the D0 on the bottom, I accidentally removed one of the solder points next to the D0. I cut away at the trace to get a good connectoin an repaired the trace with a bit of solder and plugged the fan back in.

Since then, it worked and I put it back together. I got a phone call a couple days later from him and he explains the same thing that has happened here at the house. The it shuts off and flashes after a few minutes. Now he states that if he pushes on the top of the xbox, it comes back on and plays normally. (When pressure has been applied over the dvd drive on the case.) Im curious as to if as the board heats up If I am losing connection at this point? Or it may be overheating still due to the 160gb 7200 RPM drive that was installed.

I am going to go get his xbox in a few minutes and go over the repaired lead and refix it. If that doesnt work, I would definately say it has something to do with overheating and would recommend extra fans, or at least change the fan speed in the bios settings (he plays it modded.)

bobdotson, I will post my findings here and I hope it helps you too. If anyone else here on the scene has any input, it WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Although I do not think overheating is due to the hard drive.... I have a 250gb and so does one of my other friends and we have had no problems with overheating. We both have 1.0 xbox's. (My Fav's) I have removed the metal shielding in both of our xboxs on the top half of the case to allow the neon under the jewel, but I did not do that for the other friend with the problems. Anyone heard of the shielding keeping in the heat?

i have every cooling mod possible added to my xbox other than water cooling, it should be running at a cool 80F by now i have tried running withe the HDD and DVD sat out of it, i have checked out every lead on the board checked every solder, everything... I just dont get it. is there anyone here in GA that would like to take a look at it??? like i said it still boots up no problem but after it has been on for a min or 2 it kills. i HAVE noticed that the longer i leave it off (say a day or so ) the longer it will stay on.  but never over 8 min i realy think that the temperature sensor is fucked up. and i doesn't help that i have a 1.6 that doesnt display the correct temp. so if someone has an XB dash or program that reads tha temp correctly for a 1.6 that would be cool (get it ha ha, ... joke). any more input will be appreciated

does the xbox dash have a temperature failsafe to shut off if it's too hot? Cause if it doesn't - would that not mean that if your mod chip was not on that it should just run regardless? I'm not too sure though....just a thought.

well i think that it would if it is actually in the dash cause i went on the xbox site and they say that flashing orange means overheating.  i have a question, how about the power supply?, cause that, is the ONLY, thing that gets even remotely warm. could it be a power supply failure? cause this is my thinking. the xbox does its overheating thing if the chip is on, off, removed, whatever. there is no visible Mother Board dammage AT ALL. sooo could it be possible that the powersupply is failing and that when it gets hot, it shuts the box down? just a idea, someone tell me if it sounds possible or retarted.

Your could try running the XBOX without the DVD drive, and the hard drive
plugged in, it could be the power supply is running weak after being on for
a while. Sometimes also cold sodler joints will cause this after the mainboard
warms up.
