a .mov file will not play in XMBC, it hangs up

its the Halo 2 E3 2004 Multiplayer Demo (approx 360 MB) from gamespy
[also floating around on torrent sites]

this is the movie info that quicktime gives me for format
Sorenson Video 3, 640x480, Millions+ IMA 4:1, Stereo, 44100 Hz


anyone else having problems playing this [exceedingly popular] .mov file?

oh and the game looks.... well its beyond words... gotta change my pants.

I'm trying to accomplish the same thing. Figured after quite a few months have passed that *someone* would have taken a stab at this little issue with QT movies. There's an assload of them I can't watch on my xbox.. kinda annoying..


I wanted to show some buddies up at work the Halo shizzle before they even knew what hit 'em.. but guess it's just gonna be all talk from me until then.. =/

I believe that it was made with qt 6.0 which mplayer (built into xmbc) doesn't support (yet). A few of the newer red vs blue episodes also dont work for me because of this (i believe anyways)  <

forgive my ignorance... but wtf does he mean export it as a self contained video?  If I open it, it freezes the xbox... do I have to "export it" before it freezes?  and how the hell do I export it as a self contained video?  <

Quicktime is not supported and we're not planning to add support. If someone from mplayer happens to add support we'll add that, but don't count on it.  <

he meant re-encode the the mov file on your pc to a format xbmc will accept- can do this either with quicktime pro which i think sans was suggesting from the use of the "export" term (gonna cost you) or with radtools- a tutorial of which can be found here.

You will need a suitable video and audio codec, you could use those wretched codec packs but i would just get Koepi's latest xvid binary which can be found  here, and for the audio codec i guess mp3 is the only solution if its going to be an avi

you will also need a quicktime decoder which you can get free from the apple site the link is on the tutorial

Not sure if you can use avi-synth and vdub mod to do it- never tried but if it is possible thats the way i'd go
