This is more of a theoretical question than a practical one.

My friend and I have just set up our own burning RIG, with the intent to finally creating an entire library of our own retail games we purchased over the past 2 years to create backups. The RIG uses the latest 0800 that supports XGD3 and AP2.6.

However, I don't quite understand (aside from legal reasons) why it is "safer" to make our own backups from our own discs as compared to using patched discs that have been verified by ABGX (for non-XGD3 anyway, at present).

Here is what I don't understand.

If we rip our own disc, there is ALWAYS the possibility that our rip is somehow defective. There is no way to verify our own image against the ABGX since the SS data from our rips will necessarily differ than those uploaded to the ABGX database by other users.

In other words, doesn't it make more sense for us to rip our own disc, then PATCH IT using the SS data from ABGX and overwriting our own SS data? This way, our own backups will be verifiable by ABGX.

I sense that my logic is wrong in this. But can someone tell me why?

The abgx database has, in the past, had bad data in it. If you rip your own discs, you know your data is good and valid. Now, you can always use abgx to check for corruption, but there's no reason to patch your discs if you have a valid disc and valid data.

What you mentioned is exactly the point of my UNCERTAINTY.

While I know that my source (the original retail disc) is good, I DO NOT KNOW that my rip is good.

However, I do know that the SS corrections and patches on ABGX are good, so why do I risk using my own rip of SS if there is an alternative proven source of working SS corrections and patches (that is better than mine)?

Again, this argument is outside of using my own for "legal" reasons.

The thing is, you don't know that the abgx patches are good. Any rip you make that is valid (e.g., you don't have AnyDVD running, etc.) doesn't have to be patched. The abgx patches are not as reliable and have been bad in the past. I would not trust them over your own rips.

I agree with the OP on this one, I've done 0800 rips which have failed to match with abgx the first time around and then 2 consecutive rips of the same disc matched abgx's CRC. The chances are that if your own rip doesn't match abgx's SS then that's nothing to worry about but being able to check CRC against abgx's db is invaluable. I just wish that it could be done for XGD3.

What I do is rip my original to .iso, then load up abgx and disable the write. Let it check the game crc and then you will know if you have corruption from ripping. Often ABGX tells me the DMI and SS are unverified even though I know they are fine since I ripped directly from my original.

IF the game crc checks out ok then you know your rip is most likely good.

Sometimes you will get a bad rip if your original is excessively scratched up. One of my games did this recently.

Yes, that was exactly my thought process behind my original question.

As a test, I ripped a couple of XGD2 and one XGD3 disc with 0800. Like the previous poster, the rip of XGD3 was not entirely reliable. This is what is so troublesome. I also don't have enough experience with XGD2 rips to comfortably say that these are also reliable. I hate these types of "precision" ripping when it is not just the data that need to be replicated but also all the "extras" like partitions that need to be perfectly ripped.

Is there something I can do to improve the reliability of these ripping?
