Is My Laser Starting To Fail? Samsung Ts28
« on: September 02, 2011, 08:19:00 AM »

Hey guys,

Im new to the scene really. Flashed my xbox about 2 months ago, and all was going relatively fine until....

Made a backup of a  new game with AP2.5, ran it through ABGX and got passes on everything. Went to load it onto my hard drive (I like loading games onto the hard drive so that the DVD drive only has to do minimal work) and halfway through loading it onto the hard drive, it stopped and said that it failed cos the disc was dirty. Since then, the drive has been taking a long time to recognise a disk when you are at the dash. Like, I start it up get to the dash, then load a disk, and it takes a while for it to recognise what the game is, says its "reading" for about 15 seconds, then the options come up, then the name of the game, then the picture.. It does this now, regardless of whether its an original, or a backup copy. If I have the game on the hard drive, then the game will play, but if I put a backup of an original in and try to play it WITHOUT it being loaded onto the hard drive, it loads the game, then not far into it says the disk is dirty. Originals seem to play ok though without having them loaded onto the hard drive..

Also when putting backups in, sometimes at the dashboard, it is just flat out saying, unrecognized disk...

Is the laser on the way out?? it is a samsung drive.. I heard that they have a weak laser... read it somewhere... What should I do?? Get a newer drive??

Cheers,

Try adjusting the POT or just get a replacement drive.

you can get replacement lasers for $10 ~ on ebay or full drives for about $50 AUD.
Or it could just be a dirty laser [doubt it though]

Thankyou guys,

I have a new MS28 drive on the way for $38 with delivery from singapore. Brand new.

Also because they were so cheap, I purchased two replacement lasers from a different seller "Yallstore" or "yallstock" cant quite remember, for $10 including delivery from singapore. HD63's. I searched the ebay seller name on the forum search and got mixed reviews on their lasers.

So with the new drive, so i still need to de'solder the blob on the laser?? or does it come without the solder their??

I guess its time I got the solder out.. Heck I havent soldered anything since the 6th grade! That really does look like the hardest bit of changing the laser.. De-soldering the anti static blob.

For anyones future reference, I found a sticky on how to replace the laser here:

Xbox Scene Forums

Any other little tips for this job?? Should I get a multimeter?? to adjust the POT?? hell.. what is a POT can anyone explain??

Cheers,

They have guides online for POT adjustment. Google is your friend. Search "xbox 360 pot adjustment".
