Can Backup Be Made Region Free From Region Locked?
« on: August 10, 2011, 09:35:00 AM »

I have You Don't Know Jack original disk, but cannot play on either of my XBox360's because of the region lock.

I have a Japanese 360 which only plays originals, and an Asian Slim that is capable of playing backups.

I have tried wxRipper, but it gives I have You Don't Know Jack original disk, but cannot play on either of my XBox360's because of the region lock.

I have tried wxRipper, but it gives error when writing ISO, and the hotswap doesn't seem to "spin" after inserting the game disk, and the "magic number" stays the same as for the first disk.

XBox Backup creator seems to require the purchase of a new DVD writer and since I have about 4 already (TDK, Plextor,...), don't want to waste money on another one.

Can anyone help me play my legally purchased game?

Thanks for any advice.

Simple answer: no.

Slightly less simple answer: the disc is not what does the region locking. The .xex file within the DVD structure manages region, among other things. Since the .xex file is signed with Microsoft's key, if it is modified in any way, the signature will be broken and it won't run on a non-exploited (aka non-JTAG) console.  There's no way to change the region of any game for use with a flashed or stock console. It's possible with an exploited console, but that does you no good, obviously.

THanks, that was very helpful. I'm not clear on the 2nd part of your answer. I preusme by "flashed" you mean DVD Drive firmaware flashed?

You say it's possible with an exploited console, could you please expand on that.

Thanks again.

Yes, when I say flashed I mean the DVD-ROM has been flashed with custom firmware.

An exploited console is one which is running a modified dashboard (such as freeBOOT/fbBuild). Running such a dashboard is made possible by the SMC/JTAG hack. Consoles which have been updated either by LIVE or games in the past 2 years cannot be hacked as the exploit was patched in 2009. The consoles which have had this hack applied are commonly known as "JTAG" units, though the name is a bit erroneous and, as such, I don't really like using it.

These exploited units can run unsigned code and homebrew software, so they're quite fun to have if you're into tinkering or naming your own terms when playing your games. They're a little bit more difficult to find now than they used to be, but there are still significant numbers of Xenons, Zephyrs and Falcons available.

Since these units can run unsigned code, it's possible to change the console's region and/or the game's region in order to play region-locked games that would otherwise be impossible to play.

If you want more detailed information, GIYF. There's plenty of it readily available.
