Playing Some Movs (i.e. Spiderman2 Trailer)
« on: May 02, 2004, 11:44:00 PM »

Hi all,
I am a little confused about which content _should_ run on XBMC with all codecs installed. I mean obviously xvid, mp3, divx and such work fine, but for quicktime and real media files, I am never certain if it's just me or if it's not supported by XBMC.
Take the spiderman 2 trailer for example, it won't run on my XBMC 28-04-2004. Is there any way around this, has anyone gotten it to work? How does "quicktime alternative" for windows and "real alternative" manage to handle those files (relatively) fine without having the original players installed?
So please let me know how much trouble everyone else has with playing .rm, .rmvb and .mov

Regards, Zak

There is a little file converter that works fairly well on movie trailers. I have never tried a full length movie as I doubt the quality is acceptable but for trailers it is fine.

It will convert mov to avi and it only takes a few minutes for a trailer. It is buggy and crashes occasionally but it lets me watch the Spidey2 trailer

Well like I said I do know what is theoretically supported. However this post is about 2 months old now and in terms of XBMC development that is a lot.
Also it says realmedia is supported which apparently isn't 100% accurate because last time I checked, some .rm files didn't play correctly. But it has been some time since I last checked, so it might be better now.
And since some .mov files play the situation is not as black and white as the mentioned post points out... the grey zone is what I was curios about, i.e. which mov files should play and which won't, same applies for realmedia.

However it does explain the codec situation very well, let's hope someone manages to port quicktime to xbox.

Most realmedia content will play IF you have the codecs installed. Without the codecs only a small subset will play.
Very little quicktime content will play except stuff using old codecs.

Befor you say one more word about this (so you wont look like a total noob again) i suggest a quike read of the pinned threads.

You will find some very nice threads and one that deals with .mov and other codec related questions.

And even if he did, his question would have still been a valid one.  Perhaps someone who has already tried to play these files and were successful had something useful to say.

No, since the pinned thread COVERS all those questions about new codecs etc....

If there will be full .mov playback sometime you can be sure the we in the xbmc team will make a post about it.

Untill then you get what the post from Frodo says.....

I just downloaded the latest release (20/05/04) of XMC and it plays a 1.3gb MOV file perfectly. Looks like they have coded in support!

Most likely the release you downloaded already had these codecs included. No new quicktime support has been added

From what I have read and experienced it will support up to quicktime 5 ,no higher, so some .mov files will play and newer one's won't. But like JD said this is all in the pinned topic

Those "Pinned" topic would be really great if they didn't end up as dead links...

Those "Pinned" topic would be really great if they didn't end up as dead links...

"only" dead links are:

XBMC FAQ! READ!!!

When Will the next build of XBMC be out? Please read this!

(and how/what those have todo with quicktime i do not know as that link works perfectly fine)

To all people requesting new codecs, ...explained...
This is a thread written by _Frodo_ , so READ befor asking for a new codec!!!
QUICKTIME INFO INCLUDED

http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/cgi-bin/foru...st=&&#entry8633

These two links are down due to that our .com adress is forked right now and we are trying to fix it...

So,  now go read the relevant threads in the pinned topic devoted to codecs and quicktime
