Backups On Oem Xbox 360?
« on: February 02, 2020, 04:55:00 PM »

I'm sorry if this has been asked before but from what I've found while searching various forums and google hasn't answered my question fully so I'm hoping someone here can help me out.

My question is simple. Why is it not possible to make an exact 1:1 backup of a Xbox game disk and have it playable on an OEM Xbox 360? Now I know it has something to do with the anti copy protection the disks have but why can we just copy the whole thing protection and all. Like a raw dump of the data on the disk and re-burn that onto the proper DL DVD's.

Maybe someone could provide me with how it all works or even a few links to information on this. For the past few days now I've been thinking about this and how it would seem possible to do but no one has figured out or found the means to do it properly.

Making 1:1 copies of discs is not realistically possible due to the nature of the manufacturing process. The retail discs are etched metal placed between plastic, while most discs burned in the home use dyes. As such, specific angles do not exist within consumer grade discs and cannot be reproduced.

There might be some more specific 360-related reasons, but that's the general cause.

Thanks for your reply. This answers my question. So in theory if one had the proper media to burn on along with burner it could be possible to create an exact copy?

It's not possible with consumer-grade equipment. You can't buy the proper discs as anything you might buy does not have the correct media ID (which is another fence preventing booting on the 360) and will use dye or other writing techniques that won't produce the same result as a commercially manufactured disc would. You'd need the hardware to create the discs physically from start to finish. This means you'd have to actually etch the metal yourself, or using an expensive machine, sector by sector. It would be far more trouble than it's worth, and anyone who tried would probably get into serious legal trouble.
