Play Backup Games - A Wild Idea?
« on: June 29, 2010, 04:07:00 AM »

I was searching for dual layer DVD+RW disk to backup my games. But seems it is not available. If any one finds a link - Do post it.

As it is not available - Got an wild idea to play backup games from single layer DVD+RW disk.

First we install the game on HDD/Flash drive. Then while backing up the game, we remove some files from the original DVD, so that it fits in single layer DVD+RW/DVD+R. I believe there is some kind of checking when the games starts. As the DVD+RW/DVD+R will be in tray, The game will start. And as the game is already installed, playing the game will not be an issue.

I am not sure it is possible or not. I just wanted to share my idea.

Can u provide any ref for that post? Or any software that I can try to test the concept by myself.

I believe there won't be any checking like that. Assuming the concept is same like PC. On demand the file is loaded/called.

I think it works along the same principles as the wii, since you can break down a 4gb file to around 2gb's just by removing all the fluff.

If a drive emulating modchip were to come out or anything to the extent of the types of mods the wii has, of course none will be XBL safe, then it may be possible to do so by removing the fluff... but you would need a file to tell the drive to think its there.

I'm also somewhat sure that both layers are used in most cases and there are sectors that tell the drive what layer to read from.

All that crazy new aged laser technology makes no sense to me.
