last I read was anything wave 3 or after to be on the safe side.

sounds like starting with wave 3 they changed the angle on discs, to try and force a corrected response instead of an authentic one.

before wave 3, they didn't, so backups made from a 360 drive or a Kreon were ok.  With v3, kreon's didn't make v1 ss files right (something about correcting the angles), whereas a 360 drive did it correctly.  The problem is a ssv1 made with a kreon is indistinguishable from one made with a 360 drive.

so pretty much anything wave3 or later.

Does schtrom do ssv2 without having to do anything? I chose the first one on the drop down menu, the one that says "whole disc (stealth extreme 3.0 splitvid). Is this what we should be using with a 360 drive and the 0800 software?

^ No. Use the latest version of Xbox Backup Creator, currently 2.9. You can download it here.

SSv1 and SSv2 refer to the angles between Security Sectors (SS) on original 360 discs. Many believe that all games had the same SS angles up until wave 3.

There are two primary ways 360 games are ripped: either using a Samsung SH-D162 drive with a Kreon firmware, or an original 360 drive with an 0800 firmware.

Kreon drives do not measure the angles. Instead, they apply the same angles to every rip, "jittered" up or down a bit to simulate errors which would be present with retail copies. This is referred to as SSv1.
360 drives with 0800 v1.51 and below measure the angles one time. This is also referred to as SSv1.
360 drives with 0800 v1.6 and up measure the angles twice for verification. This is referred to as SSv2.

This means that any game ripped by an 0800 drive should be safe in this regard, even if SSv1.

In the case that the belief the angles never changed until wave 3 is correct, it means any wave 1 or wave 2 game ripped by Kreon drives should be safe. That belief may or may not be valid, however.

Wave 3 and higher games ripped by Kreon drives are NOT safe.

The latest version of either XBC or S360X will do ssv2 backup.
Given that you are using a 360 drive with 0800 firmware.

I actually prefer using S360X as it's easier to use.

Sorry, I was under the impression that Schtrom was way out of date. Guess I'd better do some research before opening my mouth next time.
