Noob With Faulty Backups. Please Help!
« on: August 08, 2009, 12:56:00 PM »

Hello. I'm new here with a problem that has me at my wit's end.  I'd really appreciate any help or advice you guys could give me.

Here's my situation:

I had my Xbox 360 flashed last month. After the flash, the guy tested it out for me with some of his own back-ups. Everything worked fine.

I went out and got some Verbatim DVD+R DLs and proceeded to make my first backup. It played fine. However, the next few backups kept giving me the following error message:

The disc is unreadable.

1. Clean the disc with a soft cloth.
2. Restart the console.

I contacted the guy who performed the flash and he thought my DVD drive may be crapping out. However, the problem doesn't occur when I play the original discs. I took my console over and it played his backups fine. When he tried to play my backups in his console, the same error message popped up.

Needless to say, I was relieved that the problem wasn't the DVD drive.

After that, I thought the problem may be with my DVD burner. I'm using a LaCie Lightscribe (F.A. Porche design) (TSSTcorp SH-S162L) connected to my system via FireWire. To test the burner (which always did single layer DVDs fine), I copied a full DVD9 movie. No problem with the copy. I also burned a 8gb data disc and it had no problems.

So, my problem isn't with the burner or the discs I was using.

So here I am, at my wit's end. I've tried and tried again to make a working backup and out of the 20-pack of discs I had, I've only had 3 backups work fine. (I did use two of those 20 for the burner test, so I'm at a 6:1 coaster:backup ratio.)

My burning setup is this:
Power Mac G5 2.0 GHz with 1.5Gb of RAM running OS X 10.5
LaCie Lightscribe DVD burner (TSSTcorp SH-S162L) connected via Firewire
Verbatim DVD+R DL discs

To burn discs, I've used:
OSx360
iBurn
ISO_360_Hacker
LiquidCD 2.0

Again, I'm at my wit's end with trying to figure out how to get a burn that works like it should. I'll be happy to answer any questions to help clarify. I am thankful for any advice you guys may have.

Thanks!

My friend had this problem and I told him to burn at 2.4x. Try it yourself.

I wouldnt rule your burner out, Just because you can burn a dvd movie doesnt mean a game will work.
A move can have small errors that you wont even see where a small error in the games data can be the difference between it working and it not.

So get your disk that doesnt work and hold it up towards a light, Check the bottom of it if it has a wavy pattern at all.

I havnt used all of those programs but make sure the layer break is set correctly and if they have a verify data option use that on a disk that doesnt work.

That should give you a better indercation if it is the burner.

I posted my question on another forum as well, and their consensus was the same. I'm trying to scrounge up the cash to get a new burner and try it out. I've got a feeling that'll be the solution since this burner is a few years old.

LiquidCD will do a verify, but the others won't. However, even after passing a verify, the disc still gives the error.

I had tried my faulty backups on a guy's Xbox and they still didn't work. His own backups worked fine on mine though. It's got to be the burner at this point. I can't think of anything else it could be.
