Difference In Older And Newer 2.4x Mis Verbs?
« on: January 01, 2009, 04:21:00 PM »

I'm not sure if anyone has noticed this, but I think there's a difference between the '1st gen' MIS 2.4x verbs, and the newer labeled MIS 2.4x verbs.   The media info in dvdinfopro is the same but I just flashed my new jasper/liteon the other day, and now have noticed all of my backups(5) using the newer verbs get DREs.  However all of the older ones(6) still work perfectly. The old ones even install to HDD without a problem.

The newer ones came from Sams Club 50pk, and BB 20pk.  The older ones also came from BB but have the older label style.  All of 'em MIS.

I used a samsung SH-S183 SATA burner and all are kreon rips.

So i'm wondering if even though the newer 2.4x verb packages say MIS, are they really?  Or should we stick with 8x discs?

EDIT:pic attached. older label on left, newer on right.

Only difference I've noticed between the older ones and the newer ones are the newer ones burn great at x4 for me , but not so great at 2.4. Burnt at 2.4 my samsung clicks three times before spinning them up , at x4 it doesn't. Also newer ones at 2.4 just give open tray on my hitachi machine , but no probs at x4.

Interesting...

I burned all my backups on the new MIS 2.4x(20pk) and they all work fine in my brand new Lite-On 360. Even my friends work too no problems.
We all got the 360 for each otherfor Christmas to finally get the LIVE experience.
Our 5 player LAN parties kick @ss!  biggrin.gif *except for my one friend who uses his 20" 16:10.

On another Note, will check to see if Sam's Club in Vaughan Canada has them 50pks. smile.gif

Ok i'll try the new ones at 4x and see what happens.

I've also ordered a pioneer 216d since it's cheaper than chucking a $60 spindle of blanks, hopefully.

no joy at 4x either on the new ones.  well the 50pks from sam's are out for me unless the pioneer works for them.  lesson learned, don't buy in bulk until you've tried a sample.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

EDIT: I also just noticed the labels on the discs themselves are different.  Older on the left, newer on the right.

Well, I'm using the new 2.4x and 2x or 2.4x burn speed works just fine. No coasters as of yet. smile.gif
And I've backed up over 20 of my games so far.  smile.gif

I have the same burner and it didnt work well for me until I updated the firmware in it.

used with verbatim dvd+r rated 8x. Works well with my liteon. I read in a review that this burner (samsung sh-s183l) has problems writing to dvd+r dl :/

Newer ones are manufactured in India, compared to the older ones which were manufactured in Singapore.  Verbatim insists that there's no quality gap between the two, but people on forums say otherwise based on testing.  Also, I would expect India's quality control and labor quality to be much less than Singapore - after all, the workers must be getting paid less to justify the outsourcing.  Using a 20 pack of the new Verbatims, I've already had 1 coaster out of 9 burns at 2.4x via Imgburn and using a Pioneer 111D.  One for nine ain't that bad, but when discs cost over a buck a pop it's still frustrating to watch your dollar and change go through a shredder.

I hear the discs in the individual jewel cases are still made in Singapore.  The good news is that the discs I've been using have been reading in both modded drives I have, although on one system some games don't read as well (noticeable texture pop) as originals.  Haven't tried them on the other system, so my Hitachi's laser might just be mediocre.

yeah after writing my last post i checked my discs. I have bought  one 10x spindle and 1 jewelcase disc.

spindle says made in india and jewel case say made in singapore. May just be my imagineation but im pretty sure the jewldisc turned out better than my spindle. Installing to hd tho so it shouldnt effect the laser much,. still annoying tho since they cost me alot compared to other brands  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grr.gif)

alright I updated the firmware to SB03.  the newer discs are still getting DREs.  I'm chalking this up to crappy media.  I personally think these 50pks are really made in India, even though some say Singapore.

Thx for all the suggestions everyone.  I'll update when the pioneer 216d comes in next week, but i have my doubts.

EDIT:yeah squiq I would install to the HD but it always craps out and tells me to clean the disc on these newer blanks.

It seems that the samsung sh-s183l needs a firmware update to properly use some DVD+R DL disks.

Go here:

http://www.samsung.c...p;menu=download

for the newest firmware, install it, and report back. I have the same DVD drive, it seems to be a very popular choice of computer builders. My disks burnt fine with my Sony, but not so great with my Samsung. This may very well be the problem.

Let me know how it works out,

2.4x in imgburn

MastaFlyMason: Actually I did upgrade the firmware in the samsung but it made no difference with the newer verbs. Pioneer 216d solved it though.  It likes the older and newer MIS verbs.

I just ordered new Verbatim DVDs, the ones made in India, not Singapore. Have you noticed any problems with them? Currently I am using Memorex, and they always cause lockups in games, and won't let me transfer to the hard drive (dde) Any problems with the newer Verbatims?
