Did I Hear That Sony Uses The Same Dye As Verbatim?
« on: August 02, 2008, 09:14:00 PM »

I heard that Sony DL discs are using MKM001 dye or something like that. It is the same as the Verbatims, I think. So I know Verbatims are the best, but are there any other cheaper media that work just as well?

I think Ridek and Memorex are terrible, but what are the best discs that aren't Verbatim?

I am looking at some CRAP media on ebay. FMT, Ritek Ridata, Memorex, and Sonik Data.

Has anyone heard anything on FMT. The auction says they are from Germany, and they are cheap as HELL!

Anyone heard of these? I am tempted to buy just one to see if it works....CHEAP shipping...idk.

The deal is that for a short period of time some Sony DL media WAS outsourced to MKM in singapore but they have since reverted back to the Taiwanese manufacturers (primarily Ritek).  If it is guaranteed to be Made In Singapore then it is definitely worth investing in, otherwise it is simply an overpriced rebadge of the Ritek and Memorex discs that you love so much. wink.gif   As far as the best discs that aren't Verbatim there really are no such thing since Verbatim (MKM) are in a class of their own when it comes to DL media.  As of yet there is not a single manufacturer that has been able to come close to matching them for quality, compatibility, etc.  There are so many variables with DL media in and of the format itself and then when you start adding in things as the various different 360 DVD-ROMs/firmware it just gets that much more complex.  The best thing I can tell you is to either suck it up and buy the MIS Verbatim or experiment with the cheapo stuff when there is a good sale going on.  *EDIT* Incidentally since you are in the US, ebay is about the dumbest place to buy media (people always forget to factor in shipping costs).  $1.00 per disc + shipping for media that is questionable at best is hardly what I would call cheap.  newegg regularly has Verbatims for $1.50-$2.00 a disc with shipping included now.

In fact if you have a Sam's Club membership someone just posted that they scored the MIS Verbatim 50 packs for $50 on sale right now (see best deals on Verbatim thread).  In otherwords $1 a disc.  At that price why bother taking the gamble with the cheap crappy ones.

Hmmm I am from Germany and I have never heard of these...
If they are manufactured over here they will definitely not be cheap especially not in the U.S...

Yeah, I thought they sounded kinda shady.  I took a look over at CDFREAKS and can't find a single reference to them let alone scans and there are a bunch of members who are from that area over there.

Ya I asked the guy if he could slap one in his computer and boot up some IMGBurn and get the Disc ID for me. He said he couldn't because he can't install any more stuff onto his IBM T120 or something liek that. I looked it up, he is using a shitty laptop. And look at the auction, the DVDs have a little Donald Duck or some shit on them. I'll order one next time I am on ebay buying something.
