Recent Backup Problems?
« on: May 02, 2008, 03:19:00 PM »

Hey guys,

I've been having loads of trouble lately with my backup discs.  I have around 20 games on dvd+r dl that I made about 6 months ago.  They all worked fine at the time.  Now I went to play some today and some of them are giving me trouble... Tenchu Z randomly freezes or just goes to a black screen, etc.  Just burned Dark Sector, and every other time I try to boot it, it gives the "disc unreadable error" but the other half the time it works fine.  Now, I just burned GTA4, and half the time it's unreadable and half the time it gets the first black screen with white text, then freezes.

I have done dash updates so I can download rock band songs (I own the retail disc for that).  I was wondering if these updates could be my issue?  I know GTA4 is a working disc -- It works on my friend's 360 fine.

Ok... just an update.  I've noticed that the 3 games I have burned with verbatim media still work fine, but the rest do not.  They either freeze up or won't boot at all.

What could have caused this!?  They used to all work PERFECT!

I used XBC to rip/burn.  Never had a problem with it until recently.  My originals and verbatim discs work fine.

I went and increased the power of the laser last night and got all of my games working, except GTA 4.  No matter how many times I rip/burn that game, it freezes on the first black screen.

I'm having exactly the same problem with GTA4 - and other recent game backups I have made. I have loads of other backups on the same discs and burnt the same way (clonecd).

The new games are listed below and the problems

GTA4 - freezes at the 1st black screen with white writting
NFS Prostreet - loads up thru start movie - then a error flashes up on the right of screen but goes to dashboard before i can read
Assassin's Creed - Loads up to main menu - select new game and locks up on loading screen
PES2008 - locks up while loading initial screens

All my old games play fine. Its an ms28 drive with some oldish xtreme firmware ... version 4 or maybe 5 (it was awhile ago). PAL system and games

Why in God's name are you using CloneCD???

In answer to the TC - sounds like the cheap, crappy media is dying and the nicer stuff (verbs) is lasting them out,  Re-rip and burn some of your "dodgey" stuff and burn to a verb and try her out

Its what I have used from the start & was told it was what was best, this was late 2006. If it aint broke .... Tried imgburn after my 1st post and a new packet of the same DL discs .... GTA4 works now (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Will burn some of the others tomorrow

An ms28 with oldish firmware huh?  That's what I have.  Ver 1.2 i believe.

I don't see why XBC wouldn't work for this game!  I've never used imgburn for 360 discs, so I may give it a go.  It's nice to see someone had the exact problem as I have and was able to fix it!

I have been using CloneCD since I got my first 360 modded and I never had any problems with it.
All my backups are working fine.
I used Verbatims only though but I guess blaming the app you use to burn your images is quite pointless...

Used imgburn for all 4 games i was having trouble with backups - they now all play like the originals. Burnt at 2.4x on Aone 8 speed dvd+r DL.

So I'm going to guess that my laser is losing it's strength.  That's the only thing I can think of that may have changed within the past 6 months.  I will buy a replacement laser on ebay and see if that does the trick.  I haven't checked yet, but are there any tutorials to replacing that?  I know it's simple, I just don't see an obvious way to take it off the track yet.

Try the pot calibration first this may fix it already also clean the lens and spindle from all dust.
If this fails get a new laser/drive...

I did the pot calibration and it's just about at it's limit according to the guide (2.9).  I mentioned this in an above post and got some games to work, just not the recently burned ones... I just burned a copy of Splinter Cell Double Agent and it's not working either!  Gahhh time for a new laser / new discs!
