Backup Discs Not Working
« on: April 20, 2008, 07:58:00 AM »

I have had the xbox 360 with modded firmware for about a year now and backups have been working fine. However, recently the discs have started to become unreadable. Originals work fine. It takes about 20 minutes with constant ejecting to get them to load up. How can I fix this problem?

All backups are burned to verbatims and have little scratches on them.

Sounds like your dvd laser is on its way out then mate.. check your backups on someone elses machine to confirm it though. I recently took a machine apart to clean up the laser on someones machine who had the same problem, it now works 100% with all his backups. Good luck!

how easy is it to clean the laser? I guess not a simple job of putting a cleaning disc in.

Cleaning the laser is fairly simple, you will need a small phillips head (X-head) screwdriver, one that is the size of those screws on a pc case should work fine, and a #10 torq/star-head driver.  You just pull the drive out, unplug the wires, lift the dvd drive out (the first time you might have to break a seal to get it out, on the front of the case), take out the 4 phillips head screws and pull the metal case off of the dvd drive and you should see the laser.
To clean it, simply use a q-tip or cotton ball and some isopropyl(rubbing) alcohol (other alcohols might work too, I'm not entirely sure).  Just wipe the lens 1 or 2 times with the cotton+alcohol and then wipe it dry if you want, close it up and see if it works.  That's all I did and I went from constant Disc Read Errors to reading crap media with no problem.
Hope this helps!

hi,
i'm having the same problem, xbox originals (forza 2, kameo, pgr4) work fine so as dvd movies or divx movies burned on dvd
some backup games work fine (crash of titans, conan, pes6...) but newer games like devil may cry 3 or dark sector always report clean disc
i haven't changed the way i record discs, i'm using xbox backup creator to burn games at 2.4× on ritek dvd+dl
even tried adjusting pot calibration, that did solve problem with some games but other still don't work

I see the problem, you're using ritek dvd+dl. Get verbatims that are made in Singapore.

Call me a sheep but in my pre-mod research all I read was about how unreliable everything but MIS Verbs were so thats all I've ever bothered trying (and bother it's been.. I've found one store that sells them in town and their pricey as hell).

Zero coasters of around 30 games burned.

Right, I tried what you suggested and cleaned the laser with some whisky. It did the trick for the newer games but not the older games. Do i need a stronger alcohol?

Cheers

maybe al little detailed description, so these games are not working:
devli may cry 3 - ritek
dark sector - ritek & verbatim
nfs pro street - ritek
gta IV - verbatim

but i have a bunch of older games recorded on ritek and crappy imation dvd's and they work fine... as i've said
haven't changed method of recording games...

what is most interesting 4 games that are not working are 4 games that are recorded latest...
any suggestions???
maybe to try flashing with newer fw?  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif)
and yeah, xbox has a TS-MS28 drive

gta IV - verbatim

(assuming you read the forum rules) Where'd you buy that? I'm still waiting on the pre-orders to come in so I can see if there will be any stock left, though the way sales went on GTA:SA I'm not too hopeful.

Discussing Non working "back Ups" of games not yet on sale is never a good idea here.
