Forgot To Do The Book Type Change When Burning My Backup!
« on: April 10, 2008, 11:45:00 PM »

Hey there,

I just burned a backup on a RITEK Dual Layer DVD+R on an LG Drive. When I inserted a blank DVD+R DL its details were the following:

----------------------------------------------------------------
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10A JL02 (ATA)
Current Profile: DVD+R DL

Disc Information:
Status: Empty
Erasable: No
Free Sectors: 4.173.824
Free Space: 8.547.991.552 bytes
Free Time: 927:32:74 (MM:SS:FF)
Supported Write Speeds: 2,4x

DVD±R DL Boundary Information:
L0 Data Zone Capacity: 2.086.912
Changeable: Yes

Disc Control Blocks Information:
HL-DT-ST GSA-H10A

Physical Format Information (Last Recorded):
Disc ID: RITEK-D01-01
Book Type: DVD+R DL
Part Version: 1
Disc Size: 120mm
Maximum Read Rate: Not Specified
Number of Layers: 2
Track Path: Opposite Track Path (OTP)
Linear Density: 0.293 um/bit
Track Density: 0.74 um/track
First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196.608
Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 16.580.607
Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 2.283.519
----------------------------------------------------------------

I didn't change Book Type as you can see it says DVD+R DL.

But when I insert a DVD+R DL burned with a stealth + SS backup it shows the following details:

----------------------------------------------------------------
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10A JL02 (ATA)
Current Profile: DVD+R DL

Disc Information:
Status: Complete
Erasable: No
Sessions: 1
Sectors: 3.825.632
Size: 7.834.894.336 bytes
Time: 850:10:32 (MM:SS:FF)
Supported Write Speeds: 2,4x

DVD±R DL Boundary Information:
L0 Data Zone Capacity: 1.913.760
Changeable: No

TOC Information:
Session 1...
-> Track 01  (Mode 1, LBA: 0 - 3825631)
-> LeadOut  (LBA: 3825632)

Disc Control Blocks Information:
HL-DT-ST GSA-H10A

Physical Format Information (Last Recorded):
Disc ID: RITEK-D01-01
Book Type: DVD-ROM
Part Version: 1
Disc Size: 120mm
Maximum Read Rate: Not Specified
Number of Layers: 2
Track Path: Opposite Track Path (OTP)
Linear Density: 0.293 um/bit
Track Density: 0.74 um/track
First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196.608
Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 16.578.719
Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 2.110.367

Layer Information:
Layer 0 Sectors: 1.913.760 (50,02%)
Layer 1 Sectors: 1.911.872 (49,98%)
----------------------------------------------------------------

So does this mean it automatically set Book Type to DVD-ROM? I'm puzzled on how tutorials say to do it manually, but it seems to be automatic now? Was it my LG Drive that chose DVD-ROM automatically?

My 1.4 Flashed BenQ had no problems whatsoever in reading the burned DVD.

So is this right? Am I safe? I'm just afraid it could mean a ban (someone here theorized Book Types could be the cause, but I don't know).

Thank you in advance!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

For those who forgot to set booktype... when you insert the burned DVD does it say DVD-ROM or DVD+R DL?

So I can be 100% sure that when it says DVD-ROM it means it's really at DVD-ROM.

Thanks!

If it says "Book Type: DVD-ROM" on the burned disk, it's because your burner burned the dvd-rom book type. The info was probably in the log when you burned it, you just didn't look. And yeah, an unburned disk even in my auto-bitsetting pioneer always comes up as "Book Type: DVD+R DL" until the burner puts a lead-in on the disk (consider ROM actually means Read Only Memory, if a dvd shipped with that on it already then they aren't writable.)

I'd look for info on whether your drive does auto-bitsetting, but you don't mention which one it is exactly. So, try this. Open imgburn, select your burner, click the little book in the bottom right corner, select your drive brand, use the drop-down to pick +R DL, see what it says for "current setting." Many drives, you only have to set it once and it stays in the drive until you change it again and some drives like pioneer always set it to dvd-rom (auto bitsetting.)

My drive is a LG GSA-H10A with JL02 FW:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/LG-GSA-H10...-Burner-Review/
(Oh here it is: "Supports Bitsetting for DVD+R/+R DL (sets auto. BookType to DVD-ROM) ". So that means my drive is like your Pioneer drive then, autobitsetting is supported?)

Clicked on the book icon:
Yes it says DVD-ROM for both DVD+R and DVD+R DL. Is that correct then? It had option to choose either Normal or DVD-ROM.
I actually remember coming to this page after I noticed I forgot to do booktype change when burning, and I'm not sure if I changed anything then.

But since I didn't change anything at all before, then burned, which resulted in DVD-ROM disk backup I think it's safe to say my drive automatically changed it.

That is if ImgBurn wouldn't read a DVD+R DL burned with  DVD+R DL Booktype erroneously as DVD-ROM.
But I am throwing such odd possibility aimlessly in the air because I just don't know how these things really work..

Thank you!

Hey I just rebooted my PC and ImgBurn now says the current setting is set to "Normal".

It either changed to DVD-ROM when I burned or me changing the setting after burning.

Either way the burned backups are at DVD-ROM so there's nothing to worry about I guess, since it seems my drive has auto-bitsetting (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

"Supports Bitsetting for DVD+R/+R DL (sets auto. BookType to DVD-ROM)", if that is a feature of your current firmware, I assume "normal" = auto booktype to dvd-rom. Sounds like the LG doesn't have persistant bitsetting stores, so if you ever want to use anything besides dvd-rom you'd have to change it (and if doing consective burns change it per burn to what you need.)

Basically, the theory seems to be now that on + media, dvd-rom is a safe bet for letting pretty much any dvd reader use the disk (so most, but probably not all, drives will do auto-bitset on + disks.)

I have checked Imgburn and it is showing the booktype as DVD+R DL on a Verbatim MKM001 Singapore media - It does not seem like I can change the bitsetting in advanced settings! If I burn the disc - will the Pioneer 215D automatically change the bitsetting to DVD-ROM?

I have also posted here: http://forums.xbox-s...p;#entry4256822

Thanks

And yeah, 215 should be doing auto bit setting, the 212 I have did it out of the box (IIRC, it came with 1.18 or something around there.)

The necessity to set booktype was done away with earlier on in the old Xtreme. Later Xtreme's and all iXtreme versions do not require it whatsoever, as the firmware itself takes care of it.

Good news to hear!  I just got a new laptop, but the DVD writer in it doesn't support bitsetting.  I didn't know if it was still necessary or not.

Thanks
