I picked up a 50 pack of the MIS Verbatims from Sam's. Backups work just fine, burned at 8x (no more 2.4x yay!), even though the package says 2.4x, they'll burn at 2.4, 4, 6 or 8x. No one said anything about Made in Singapore Memorex discs - I'm assuming you meant Verbatim. Memorex is shit, even if it works now, it won't work for too long, though there is always an exception to the rule.

How much are those 50 Verbatims' cost at Sam's Club?

Well you just proved my point, the mis purple packaging verb have a issue with some discs like I said a few had blemishes in the dye before I even burnt on it, sounds like you had one like that too.  Never had that issue with any of the verbatim orange packaging or the old school verbatims.  My friend ordered them from a different place and a few weeks from me.
I know there was 1 in 20 with a visible defect, that doesn't change the fact that the rest are perfectly fine. I should have mentioned the MII disks I had, of 20 - 3 I wouldn't burn due to dye runs and another 4 or so had concentric scratching in the outer inch of the disk (mainly due to letting grit into the package before shipping.) The Fuji (ritek d01) disks had 5 of 15 with visible dye runs/blots. The memorex disks (ricoh) had surface defects not limited to but including dye runs (if you have ever seen the pins used for pottery, you'd know what they looked like only smaller.) The only caveat I can add is that I didn't go all out and get a tonne of alternate brands from different sources, I grabbed only basically a random spindle from local in store stock for my own trials.

I also burnt mine at 2.4 because I was always told slower burn gives a deeper burn, how could that not be the best speed to burn at?
It isn't really a matter of "deeper" it is a matter of how long the dye is exposed to the light levels required to imprint the bits - and even then it more comes down to how well the disk spins at the slower speed rather than that. Balance does seem to be the issue, especially if you are getting "propellering" (which will look like a moire under a correctly angled light due to the fact there are 2 opposing layers of them.) In my experience, burning at a slightly higher speed seems to get better results with less propellering on susceptible media and thus improved scan results - but the fact is that both speeds still give excellent results (esp. when compared to the other dual layers I have tried.)

If you go to this forum you will see some people found what I found, the MIS purple packaging are good, but nowhere near the quality of old school verb or orange packaged 8X branded.

I get what you are saying, and it amounts to this: "I'm thinking of a  personal boycott for the only acceptable product currently in the market in favor of known to be inferior ones because the superior one isn't 100% perfect" - and I say go ahead (especially if you aren't going to bother with the warranty), if you can find yourself some disks that give uniform results on your burner at a far better price by all means find them - I certainly tried and found the competition and their results to be so inferior that it only makes sense (even cost wise) to stick with what I found works exceptionally on my burner. Just keep in mind what I'm still trying to get across - in the end often the cheaper way is actually more expensive.

I still say your experience is ancidotal...  I can link to 10X the number of posts of people that are not having problems.

Maybe your discs are FAKE?  Did you order off the web at a no name shop or a reputable retailer?

And as I stated before... try burning at 4X.... try updating your DVD burner firmware..
