Laptop Dvd Burner
« on: January 29, 2008, 12:32:00 PM »

Hi,

For starters the SH-D162D is not a burner, its a DVD-ROM drive and it only reads.
Its ideal for reading and dumping game data - I personally use this drive and also use a Pioneer 111d burner to write my backup's using Winxp Pro, not sure about Vista though.

Just thought I would point you in the right direction...!

Cheers

and as far as ripping externally, im not too sure it will work.

i know its real fussy and like to be on the primary master IDE chain and i dont think you can enable DMA on usb devices... could be wrong though!

Im in the same boat as you, i need an external burner for my laptop but having read what ILLusions0fGrander has said, which went over my head, what i was able to gather was that external burners PROBABLY wont work well, if at all.

I wanted to purchase the pioneer 112D but i would need to buy an enclosure and have been recommened by people who have made that mistake that the pioneer 'plays up' or causes problems when used with an enclosure.
I then went to look at the 115D but am not sure if its good when it comes to burning xbox360 games as i've yet to hear from anyone who actually has one or uses it. i presumed it was good enough because i though it was just an upgraded external version of the 112D burner.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

So a drive that needs to have the kreon firmware is only the reading portion of the burning process?

yes.

as far as using an external drive to BURN a properly ripped image, it should work with a decent burner. there are compatibility threads you can find from the backup faq.

Hi,

I am currently using a 112D on my PC, but i'm getting rid of the PC over the weekend but bought the 212D today for my laptop and a PCMICA VIA6421 sata card.

Dont think I will have a problem though, will update when they have arrived and I have tested them out.

Cheers

Ok so most likely If I get the external dvd player with kreon v1.0 flashed to use to dump games onto my hard drive I could most likely use my stock dl dvd burner to rip the games correct? Thanks I am pretty confused.    Kreon is only needed to read games correct?

Thanks for any info/advice
