Best Burn Speed For Verbs W/ Pioneer 111?
« on: November 10, 2007, 07:38:00 AM »

Hi,

First off I have a Hitachi 47d flashed with ixtreme 1.2 and am burning with a Pioneer 111 and Verbatim MKM001. When I first started backing up my games I tried to burn at 2.4x but none of them would play, so I tried 4x and 6x which worked. This seems strange as most people in the Hitachi compatability thread have reported good results with 2.4x. My only reason for concern is that the drive sounds like it is having a hard time reading my last 6x burn (FIFA 08) and also the game stutters in replays.

Should I have another crack at 2.4x, as the last time I tried it was with C4EVA's 2.4 firmware, or go with 4x? Does 2.4x actually yield better results than 4x?

This may seem like a trivial question but I don't want to waste any more of my precious Verbatims.

Thanks.

good rule of thumb is this....the slower the better, regardless of of hardware and media.

here is a good example from my ps2 experiences..... I could backup that one ff game that was based off of vincent valintine (cant remember the exact name of the game off hand) and it burned fine, but it had audio sync issues. I re-burned the same image I made before at slowest speed, and it came out perfect.

That was one case, all other backups I have made I did at max speed with no issues.

personally, I would start out slow, and gradually increase speed on each backup until I started to notice abnormalities (audio sync issues, gfx glitches, increased loading times, ect), then you know to back it down a notch and you found your personal "sweet spot".

Just because john doe can burn at 8x doesn't mean jane can.

I've personally been burning at high speeds for a long time across many different setups (ie XBOX, PS2, PS1, XBOX360) and never had an issue.  I prefer 4x for my 360 burns though.  Much faster than 2.4x and the same results.

I also noticed this, the old days when CD/DVD burner was slow speed, it was best to burn @ slow speed. But lately when the media increases it's speed, the result is not best @ slow speed.

For example. If a DVD is rated @ 16X, then the best speed to burn is around 8X-12X, 16X would render the disc with alot of erros, and 4X-6X quality isn't as good as 8X-12X. Pretty weird, but i've personally tested this out. The burn speed needs to match the disc's rated speed, so slower isn't always better.

Wow, thanks for the replies everyone. Very helpful. I think I'll start burning @ 4x from now on. The Verbs I'm using are rated at 2.4x but my 360 doesn't like discs burnt that slow. Soso is right, its a black art.
