Pioneer Or Plextor Dvd Burner ?
« on: July 23, 2007, 01:03:00 PM »

That's only half of it, those are just the burners, you can't make a backup of your 360 games with just the burner. Read thru the Pinned topic: Backup Faq, where I moved this thread to, plenty of info in there on making backups correctly. Either of the Pioneer drives or your Plextor will do the job fine, I use the Pioneer 111D and it's an excellent drive bar none.

The Plextor will be fine as long as you make sure your firmware is up to date and can set the booktype to DVD-ROM on your DL DVD+R discs.  Also which DVD-ROM drive do you have in your 360?  If you have the Hitachi you will need to make sure you have one of the latest firmwares flashed to the drive in order for it to read discs burned by your drive.

check Backup Faq - Everything* You Need To Know  , you will find info on burner.

you should be ok, I use liteon. Until your burner proves it cannot do the job, you can go on the assumption that pretty much all DL burner will do.

The deal is that the booktype setting adjusts how the lead-in is written.  By nature the DVD+R discs are formatted in such a way that some players/drives have difficulty reading them.  By setting the booktype to DVD-ROM it makes it so that it is read like a factory pressed disc, thereby greatly improving it's compatibility.  It's not 100% necessary to set the booktype to DVD-ROM with the latest firmwares on the 360 DVD-ROM drives but it definitely won't hurt you and in some cases can make the difference between a coaster and a working backup.  It is also possible that your Plextor automatically sets the booktype to DVD-ROM for you on DL discs.  Certain drives (such as the late model Pioneers) support this feature.  One way to verify for sure what the booktype is set to is to use http://www.dvdinfopro.com and pop the disc in your PC drive.  It will tell you what booktype it is.

I know they are great burners but it doesn't help the guy answer his question as to whether or not he needs to replace his plextor.  wink.gif

LOL, Personally, after reading numerous reviews on both drives I have come to the conclusion that they both work just as well and since my old Plextor has been working flawlessly - I decided to keep it (old theory of "if it aint broke dont fix it!" - except for the 360 haha lol).
