memorex problem
« on: April 03, 2007, 10:12:00 PM »

Got a problem with my ms28. It works flawlessly with verbatims, however, I bought a 50 pack of memorex (ritek) and it's having a hard time reading those. They sometime work, for 2-3 minutes then it says the disc is unreadable.

I tried tweaking my pot, originally at 3.5, dropped it a couple of times and now it's at 2.8 and they still won't work. Anyone got an idea? Something else than "stick with verbatim", wouldn't want to waste 50 dvddl you know.

The only other thing that I would suggest is to try updating the firmware on your burner.  I definitely wouldn't be screwing around with things such as the pot-tweak.  Not worth screwing up your 360 DVD-ROM for a bunch of inferior quality discs.  There is a reason why people say "stick with Verbatim" when it comes to DL media as there really is no other media that comes close to them for quality and compatibility.  It's not like single layer media or CD-Rs where you have more options.    There are those who have success with cheaper quality DL media but there are a number of variables that have to come together that it really is like playing russian roulette.  Personally I would try to see if you could return the discs or maybe save them for other applications as regular DVD Players and PC drives tend to be a little less fussy.

Yeah, I missed the verbatim sale at futureshop, the week after memorex were on sale and I didn't have any dvds left, that's why I bought that... damn. Gonna try to see if there's an update for my burner, thanks for the tip.

One more tip of advice, return your pot to the original position and burn using CloneCD and a Pioneer 111d with a firmware of 1.23, this has worked flawlessly for me, but after a while I got the open tray and of course I had to do the rubber band mod and that fixed every problem, so good luck getting them to work.

For you.  Anyways, once again we need to clarify that Memorex=Ritek D01.  Thing is that unless there is some incredible sale on them, there really isn't much of a savings over Verbatim (at least in North America).  You can currently get the 10 packs for $15+tax on a regular basis from Officemax.

When I bought Verbatims, I couldn't find a better deal than 20 for 50$, now I had 50 memorex for 60$, it seemed like a pretty good deal to me... yeah, seemed like, after all the problems I've had with them.

Anyway, I think I found out the problem!

Just when I was about to try dropping the pot below 2.8k out of desperation, I thought about heat issues. I noticed that under the dvd-rom, there was a brown pattern like that the heatsink under it burnt the metal or something. So I opened my 360, took out the dvdrom drive, put it next to it and removed the bottom half of the case.

Results? 2 out of 3 of my backups work perfectly! Now I just need to find a way to cool down that monster and it'll be fine. I heard about Talismoon's Whisper fan and I'm thinking about getting one. Another idea is get a replacement laser lens. However, on divineo they say the replacement lens is compatible with lg and hitachi drives. Do they work with my samsung ms28?

I can't help but think this thread might be moved again in another section  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Anyway, thanks for all the help people  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/love.gif)

Ok I checked which laser lens I'd need if I wanted a new one, however, do you guys think this new lens would read memorex? (hd67 lens)

maybe , maybe not.

as posted often, it is not that Memorex do not work, just the % of chances for it not working is greater than verb. More or less the same for  the new laser.

Just my .02 but it's rediculous to go through all of that and force your 360 hardware to do something it isn't designed to do just so you can get it to read that spindle of discs.  There is absolutely no garantee that replacing the laser will fix the problem.

Yeah I know... I'm like that, when I want something to work I'll do about everything, especially after spending quite a bit of money. I mean, the memorex work great now, since I got my dvdrom out of the 360 and it doesn't get it's bottom burned by the gpu's heatsink, but as soon as I'll assemble it all back, byebye.
