Xbmc + Online Gaming Tutorial
« on: April 21, 2004, 09:55:00 AM »

*Update* This now works with Kai VII!!! check out http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=220234 for the quick fix! *Update*

Now that V1 is ready I thought I would show one of the best features of XBMC. The online gaming support. With this you can play any system-link game over the net! If you have ever used Xlink (or xbconnect) before you'll be right at home. XBMC support XLink kai 3 version. This system is still in beta (beta 0006c to be exact), that means there ARE bugs and you MAY exsperiance problems. Fortunatly the next release (0007) will be public and forced upgrade. (Meaning lots of people will then be online)

You will need
1) a pc
2) a xbox
3) a home network with both the pc and xbox on it
4) a internet connection

First lets create an account on kai 3...
follow this link and create it with your own username and password
http://www.xboxlink.co.uk/kaisignup.php

Now lets download the XLink Kai tunnel program for your computer. This program will sit and tunnel all the network traffic from the xbox around to your playing partners. It must be running on your PC while you are playing or viewing games in the browser.
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=161907

extract the downloaded file to the location of your choice. Install the included WinPCap first (You may need to reboot to complete the install) Then run 'launcher.exe'
Then select 'Start Kai Engine'  Dont worry about any port settings in the advanced tab for the time being. If you have problems later refer to this thread
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=152194

Now select 'Launch Kai' and log in

Congratulations! Kai is up and running!

You can now use the pc to browse the different game rooms, after you have selected a game room just go to your xbox and select system link game and play away.

Thats great and all but who wants to browse the game rooms on your pc? Lets set up XBMC with your username and password.

Open up your XboxMediaCenter.xml files and find the lines that say...

CODE

 Loto_Bak
 password

And its pretty self explanitory what to do there. Match up the information exactly with the account you created.

Now xbmc should be ready to go! Transfer your XboxMediaCenter.xml back to the xbox.

To be sure that everything is working, log into kai on your pc so that you are able to browse the different game arenas. Now start up your xbox and go into XBMC. If kai is able to find your xbox, the XLink kai window will go away and the only evidence that the kai engine is running will be a icon in your system tray.  This is good :)

(Note : after you are sure that everything is working, you do not need to 'lauch kai' it will still work if you only just 'start kai engine')

FYI
I use the Project Mayhem skin. It can be had at http://www.critikill.net/  and is updated quite often.

Now in XBMC go down to the big X on the bottom right (In project mayhem skin) If you are using the default skin I BELIEVE its in the top left but am unsure. You'll have to find it yourself.

Now you should be able to browse the different 'games', 'areans' and 'friends'. You'll catch on quick. After you have found an arena (for example 'first person shooter/halo/ntsc/' go and run the game and go to system link and you should see the games there! And if you start your own game there, others will be able to join as well!

And yes it is compatable with games on your harddrive!  Just use the back button and use (if you have xbmc setup properly) the 'my programs' tab or use the 'my files' tab to locate the games default.xbe file.

Now some people are bitching about how many people are on kai3. Kai3 is still in beta and is not a forced upgrade yet. Therefor you wont be able to connect to anyone using xlink RC2. (The current public version) So don't be disapointed when you dont see many people online. The more people like you that start using it the better it gets! And who can beat a intigrated browser like this? Soon everyone using RC2 will be required to upgrade to Kai3 and there will be more than enough people online.

Goodbye live, hello free xlink!

*EDIT* Fixed spelling, made a few points more clear and added rant about the few people online :D  You can find me online under the nick loto_bak, i'd love to have a game of ghost recon island thunder with ya!

*EDIT* Fixed the name of Xlink kai, added misc info

*EDIT* Now workign with xlink Kai VII... check out http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=220234

Yes the 'play' button only works if the game is in the dvd drive... otherwise just go out to my programs or my files like quest4547 said

And thanks quest4547  :D

Here's some heads up info.

Firstly, you only need the ENGINE to be running on the PC. You don't need to click Launch Kai.

On other matters...

it's XLink Kai.. not XLink Kai 3. The current XLink Kai BETA is build 0006. The next build, is not going to be a BETA. It's going to be the 7th build, and will be released publicy (internally tested this time). So the full title is XLink Kai Evo7... but don't even get worried about that.. Just call it XLink Kai or Kai smile.gif

The support in XBMC is VERY VERY basic. RUNTiME's work on this is great, as is other dashes who are supporting it in their dashboards. However, the functionality is very simple at this point in time.

For those of you that would like to try XLink RC2 (the last stable release), it's on our website http://www.xboxlink.co.uk, but don't get too bogged down with it. Supporting it is a bitch, and it's technically light years behind Kai. However, we initially made a XBox program that remotely controlled XLink RC2. It was called Bo-XLink, and is still available (from XBins) and has some really cool features in it. However, instead of having a separate program, integration is the key smile.gif There's some cool features coming your way wink.gif

XLink Kai, when finally released, will support XBox, GameCube and PlayStation 2 consoles with system-link enabled games. However, XBox users get the advantage of homebrew software and a HDD, so they'll be able to log on remotely through XBMC and Avalaunch and many others as teams being to integrate smile.gif

What you sign up for on that page is only valid for the current BETA of Kai. When we move over to the final release, we will require all new memberships, as we have a completely new integrated website community.

Please have a browse of our forum for help, you should find most of the time what you're looking for.

Thanks for the tips Loto_Bak.

dfunked,
Team XLink.

code in it, so I just added it, it doesn't seem to matter where, as long as it's not between something elses tags.

Maybe someone can offer a bit of help.  I followed this tutorial and am able to see the arenas in xbmc.  I went into halo ntsc and can see five or six games open.  I then hit back and ran halo from the hard drive (I also tried from the DVD).  When I get into the game and choose system link I'm not able to see any games.  Any one have any suggestions for me or experiancing the same problems?  Thanks

First.. thoes arnt games you see... but people.
2nd. it could be one of two things (or a combination). Perhaps your firwall is interfearing with xlink
OR
the simpest explination... there are no going running. Perhaps if you start one others will join

I am excited to see a update with all the features of xlink into xbmc. Hopefully it will have a games browser to see whats running and whos where smile.gif
